3/2 should be warm enough but you might want to bring the booties just in case if theres a lil wind...

Ah yes... the temp you see on Swellinfo is relative to the closest NOAA buoy offshore. Usually those bouys are closer to the northbound Gulfstream.

A phenomenon called Ekmans transport is responsible for the chilly you feel. Its where the wind will blow in one direction, in our case from the south, surface water will have stress on it tangent to that , and similar to properties of a Mohr's Circle, the direction ends up being perpendicular to the direction of flow. Check the schematic below for an easier explanation.

    guys,

on the upwelling days with the S/SW currents, the water temp is going to be colder than it shows on Swellinfo. We are using a satelite/buoy derived data set for ocean temps. This is the best we have right now and unfortunately its never going to capture the cold upwelling waters, because this process only takes place close to the coast.

I've been searching for alternatives for a while, but until then, just please keep this in mind.

Yeah, It def was 72° now it's 57° this morning right now. S/SE swell brings in cold water. The temp will go up as the day continues I would predict around 65° - 66° for today at best. As i said on other posts the water temp changes every hour. It's a pretty simple concept S/SE swell pushes the warm water up the the coast and out to sea due to the Hook. (Sandy Hook) That's how sandy hook was created. the opposite N/NE swell will bring in warm water to the coast. Find yourself a good local weather station. I have one at the end on my street connected to a pier. It updates every 5 minutes. So i can see real time temps, air, water, gusts, swell, wave heights....directions of all previously mentioned.

This is very useful to me as i can get real accurate readings from where we are located in the water not miles out to sea where the buoys are. Don't get me wrong the buoys are very helpful in figuring out predictions. But, what i found out is that the local station to me is more accurate then the buoys.

I would post the site but it's for locals only....sry.

I just got out of a the water this morning.. wore a fully sealed 3/2 and 5mm booties, and it was seriously cold. the water can't be more than 55 this morning in LBI. Its insane. I'm wearing a 4/3 when I go back out this afernoon if it stays around this temp. The fog/overcast skies aren't helping the matter.
