Long story short, I am about to graduate college and will be collecting my security deposit on my rent for the year (idk how) and would like to buy a log to get me through the summer. I do prefer getting a custom shape to support the local shapers but if I took this route the board probably would not be done until August-September. What's the best shop in northern ish NJ (Monmouth-Ocean County) to find a good longboard in stock. I don't need anything fancy, just a big board that will get me on the summer time waves
Ummmmmm College security deposit? If you did College correctly, you will not be seeing any of that money! Hahaha but seriously............
It takes way less time to get a custom than you think. This isn't California... ~Brian www.greenlightsurfsupply.com Shape Your Surfing Experience
the beach house board shop in bay head has by far the best selection on logs. Its a small shop but every log they have is awesome. One of the only shops in north nj that carries bings, joel tudor, hap jacobs etc.
I just finished shaping a bunch of logs, You are more than welcome to come by my shop in Wall and check them out before I glass them. My turn around for a longboard is 3 to 4 weeks. these picks are a few I have done in the past
Nice boards at the BH but expect to pay up. Also check the used racks on the 2nd flr at Eastern Lines in Belmar - often have a nice Murphy or Hank Warner LB at pretty good prices. I think Greenlight and the other brands there are a bit on the hobbyist side - not the cleanest shapes that I've seen but the folks are friendly and polite.... Maybe the used board room at BNW in the Point? Forget Spellbinders - too expensive and not a great vibe ... Same w/. all the BNW shops, too Rant over...
It would be worth taking a look at Island Style in Sea Bright. Tom Eadon shapes for Derf and you don't get any better than Tom
If you want to support your local shapers- go to Green Light or Mahady. You could even shape your own at Greenlight. Mahady's boards always look nice and it seems like he specializes in the old school longboard shapes... beautiful boards... if I was going to get a new longboard- he would be the man. Plus- he is a real local, you can surf with him in Monmouth Co, look for his truck. His boards are some of the better shapes I have seen. Green light is one of the better up and coming shops around. If you want to support your local shop, you will just have to look at all the shops around and find a board, they all have different boards at different times. If you don't have along of money to buy new- craigslist...
Please stop by the shop and point out the boards you think aren't shaped well. I'm interested in your expert opinion - as a consumer. Be my guest and borrow a board from our demo rack then let's hear your educated opinion. God forbid boards designed for Mid-Atlantic waves actually stoke people out. Waves this week. Come grab a board. ~Brian www.greenlightsurfsupply.com Shape Your Surfing Experience
Wow! Those boards are beautiful. I'm really digging the pastel strips. Wish I was close enough to stop by.
Wow, the Mahady boards look beautiful and I am very interested in buying one or getting a custom shape. If I have enough cash I will definitely be giving you an email after I graduate (May 20th)
I HIGHLY recommend Tom Mahady for a longboard. He has a library of vintage templates and some incredible modern designs of his own. Can't say enough good things about him and his work.
Thank you everyone for the kind words, just trying to make the best boards possible. Yourdirtymomma the pastel striped board you like is also a step deck Endlesssummer89, give me a call or email anytime and let me know what you're looking for and we can go from there, no pressure, you're more than welcome to come by anytime, have a beer and shoot the s%#t Tom
Careful how you generalize. Although I can see why you would associate Greenlight with the hobbyist, considering that is who he markets his materials to, Mahady Surfboards are sold there and you are smoking crack if you think those are "a bit on the hobbyist side". Maybe you saw another board there that was hobbyist, but lets be sure not to put that label on Tom.
I'm in FLA, so stopping by is not easy. And now I'm going to throw my soul surfer on the table.....I just started surfing a year ago March (or at least started trying to surf ) What is a step deck about? My goals are all about long boarding.....I want to hang five, hang ten, hang heels, stand on my head, learn to flip my board and just in general do awesome things What do you recommend as the best style for these goals? I have a nose rider now......but recently I was told by a long term surfer that my board is also a "nose diver".....and all this time I thought it was just me
I would speak to Derf at Island Style in Sea Bright and check out Toms stuff if you want one shaped. Tom probably has more experience shaping than any of these guys commenting on here. If not, talk to Ron at Spellbinders in Allenhurst. Good luck and hang ten!!
Step decks are used to make the board flex when on the nose, thus straightening out the rocker in the board giving you more speed and a little more performance feel in the nose. The type of log you get is really dependent on the way you want to surf and the style of the board. There are some noseriders like a David Nuuhiwa that has little nose rocker and a large amount of tail rocker. Seeing as you are getting a couple hundred dollar security deposit back I would recommend stopping into Beach House or Heritage and taking a look at some of their logs. Bing makes a couple of user friendly noseriders that will do everything you described above. Don't fall into the whole east coast/west coast crap a board is a board, some are for different waves/conditions, but ideally waves on both coasts are the same.
if your after a used log, keep an eye on craigslist. if you want something new, have the loot to spend top dollar, and dont want to bother with research etc, check out your local go to shops. but i think you should 100% go to greenlight to at least look and talk to the guys there (you did say you were from monmouth county). they have some good logs on the racks. and who knows after talking to them you may find yourself getting a custom log for cheaper then a new board in a shop.
