Hello all. First time poster. Midwest surfer. No not the great lakes. I travel. New to surfing this year still not very good since I was by myself trying in crap surf. I got up after second wave but they were shot lived atlantic waves. I'm headed to Texas this week for a while and if the surf is no good I'll head to SoCal once i'm done (forecast looks very bad) Anyways, I think it might help if I had someone pointing out what I am doing wrong. So if anyone is Surfside or in Galveston that won't mind letting me know where, when and how to surf better. I would really appreciate it. Whats water temp? bring my suit? booties? Well I guess not. I'm here in Houston. Swell sucks right now May head to the west coast. If anyone see's this let me know.
Galveston surf has been fun to learn in, for me at least. I'm 39 and going on my second year. Forgiving slow surf will not intimidate and will make you paddle your ass off to catch the slow waves without much push. Ifyou can surf in Galveston...you'll be able to ride anywhere theres good push and consistant conditions for sure!
You made the right choice continuing west on I10, our weather patterns have been weird the last couple of years. Usually October and the November are cranking, but we're in a weird funk lately. Spring has been good the last couple of years, hurricane seasons have been pretty weak. I guess that's a mixed blessing though.
What Matt said. We in Surfside are looking forward to the new sand we're about to get. They push the sand about 120 feet into the water and it makes a killer shore break. Best way to learn is to just charge it and listen to your own gut feeling and stay out for a few hours at a time unless your a drinker or smoker than you might as well not surf for more an 30 mins at a time. lol....I'm out for 2-4 hours, 2 sessions when surf is good. You need a long board for Texas.
I grew up there...brown mush comes to mind. Leave the board at home. If there happens to be surf rent one.
Trent, I take offense to your comments. You're barely a yearling surfer yet you think you can come and dismiss Atlantic waves? Sure it can get flat on the east coast but it's awful brash of you to disregard an entire ocean. Now Houston sucks too? Are you the surfer that can't surf on anything less than head high? I hope the west coast is going off for you otherwise you're only chance left to enjoy the sport is Hawaii or indo or something. Good luck friend.
Soon. most of the sand they put on beach dr has moved down the beach and the city has pilled it up at dune line. GLO will be here within a month to move it all back to beach dr. I think they have to be done by Feb. stoked! ill post it when they're here.
Go to Huntington Beach. Ask for "the Snake" and you can get some pointers for surfing the HB Pier. Have fun in SoCal.
