I know everyones going to start freaking out that i want to leave the east coast for a week in october, but relax, this is when i have time to travel. anyway, my buddy and i are trying to think of surf spot to travel to during mid october that is not located in the US and will have killer waves. anywhere non traditional would be sweet so we can make an adventure out of it. appreciate the help

Mainland Mexico... The southern Hemi's will still be kicking and offer ridiculous waves all over the middle to south mainland... The beauty is that there are points and coves everywhere, so on a huge swell, Puerto Escondido will be 25 feet and you can drive 10 miles south and find a nice chest to Head high point break with a different beach angle to it.... There are just tons of options for you and all of central america and mainland mex to Baja goes off....

You can also do Costa, Nicaragua etc... but Mainland mex is often overlooked. Cheaper flights and tons of options... You also wont find the random central american crowds.

Ohh, and the water temps will be around 80

that is prime time for heavy rains n onshore winds for a lot of central america. atleast here in Nica, so its not the most ideal time to visit. A lot of the onshore flow is from the tropical storms/low pressure systems in the caribbean that pull the weather east. im not sure if that goes for mainland mex and baja bc its way north of here.

yeah, baja and mainland dont suffer from the rains that time of year... Doesn't start until later into the winter months.

Be careful if you drive down, and don't take any firearms.

Its pretty safe during the day. Acapulco has gained ground on Tijuana as far as Cartel violence and kidnappings, but the general rule there is that if you are not involved in the drug trade, or the child/relative of an important mexican, central or south american politician or big whig business man that you have nothing to worry about. I would avoid that city in particular and just do your driving/traveling during sunlight hours. The mainland mexico backroads etc are dicey at night. no headlight laws down there and banditos usually strike at night.... I would say that mainland mexico is just as safe as Panama, Nic or Costa... Every dog has its day... People have had issues in all of those places, but mainland mexico is a surf playground.... cheap as hell too.

Check out Troncones Mexico, it's a small fishing village about 30K north of Zihuat and Ixtapa, there is a point there and fantastic point about 30 minutes north of that.
