So today is my birthday and I took my new 9'4 Takayama NR2 (which I think is the best board for East Coast longboard waves) out on its maiden surf.

It was thigh to waist high on the sets with a light NW wind down here at Charlotte St. in Wrightsville Beach. Nice little A frames with a slow peeling right but the lefts were bowling up and offering a nice little pocket for getting to the nose. Water temp is 79 and the dolphins were in close to shore snacking. Beautiful morning...

I take off from the peak and go left and a guy on a funboard takes off from the shoulder also going left. I'm having fun getting the feel for my new longboard so I don't say anything and just cruise down the line behind him. As the wave tapers off, he attempts a cutback. I straighten out to get out of his way but he loses speed and falls off and our boards bump.

He gets onto his board and gets very aggressive immediately. His argument is that I should have gone right because he was going left. I told him I could go whichever way that I preferred and that he was at fault for dropping in on me. I'm a goofyfooter by the way, although I'm comfortable going left or right. The "conversation" got pretty heated and he was adamant that he was correct. I feel he was wrong.

    Any thoughts?

Happy birthday.... punk. Hahahahaha! Just kidding. I would have given him the, "right behind ya...." at the drop and just kept an eye in his rail.

You are in the wrong for not doing one or both of the following....
    1. calling him off the wave
    and/or
    2. taking his legs out when you got close enough to him...

lol... just kidding about #2.... but you should have called him off, although in the wrong he possibly had no clue you were behind him.

He cut you off, it was so small this morning there's no way he couldn't have seen you if he was looking... and wtf was he doing taking off on the shoulder of a tiny wave? You're on the peak, you have priority, you shouldn't have to call some kook off your wave. However, you should have called him off! There were plenty of little peaks all over WB this morning and no reason for someone to even attempt to paddle for a wave if someone had better position.

I know, what a punk:eek: That had me cracking up, given the fact that I'm 36. But this guy made me feel like a punk. He actually invited me to the beach, which I have never done, but I almost wanted to go, I think just for the hell of it. In a split second I put it on my bucket list and was ready to cross it off right there. But then reality/maturity? set in, which is what happens when your 36 (although I still have my moments). Would have been a great birthday story, though. Or could have been

Yeah, I normally would call someone off but it was such a nice morning and I was out there to have fun and was trying to be mellow about it. That's what I get for being chill...

Sounds like this guy wanted a fight no matter what. First, he didn't realize he dropped in on you, second, he hit you with his board. Good job not following him to the beach, that's what is sounds like he wanted and I bet it burned him up even more that you didn't oblige.

In Jersey they would have benched it out! Happy Birthday and I think you did the right thing. Who got to their feet first? Also, the dolphins were snacking? LOL Sorry, it just sounds funny

I wonder how it would have turned out if I had called him off. I think he would have dropped in on me anyways since he didn't even bother to look. Maybe we would have taken that trip to the beach. Would have been pretty funny - haven't been in a proper fight since I got jumped in high school and that didn't turn out so well for me:cool:

Ah, the possibilities... Too bad we can't go back and play out each and every scenario and just go with whatever works out best. I like to think I'd be here where I am right now, I don't have many complaints. Man, birthday's really make you think... I'll stop rambling. Thanks for the birthday wishes. I'm gonna go home and chill with the wife and dog now.

Don't let it ruin your birthday man! Same thing happened to me at Oceanic...guy dropped in on me and when I called him off he got all agro and said that , and I sh!t you not, that according to the rule book he had the right of way and that he didn't drive all the way from Raleigh to get called off. It was thigh high and I just laughed at him and told him he should have gotten the 2013 edition with the revisions. He left.
