im in a tornado of torrent watching the ground way below me as i spiral out of control.. so i've dropped out of college after half a semester. i decided i was sick of going to school. now sit at home on my lazy a$$ all day waiting for my hand to heal so i can get a job but I'm debating to back to school. I'm thinking about going to community college in the san diego area which would be cool and i have a couple of friends that live out there and they said i can move in with them. also I'm thinking about possibly joining the coasties or navy. but the issue with that is that i wanna be able to surf as much as i can. what do i bruddahs??

My dad has been in the air force for 27 years and is a master Sargent and said that it was one of the best decisions he had ever made

Go back to school... Or if you are passionate about joining the military than go for that.
Don't just settle for a job to get by. You will regret it eventually.

You're true job at 20 should be shagging as much as possible, do that and good fortune will follow, so long as you wrap that thing up and don't get too reckless with your seed

Go to a tech school and get skills to make money immediately. There's no shame being a debt free plumber. Don't waste your money on a liberal arts degree or go into communications while planning on getting an MBA and hoping something will work out. You'll end up in a lot of debt.

This is one of the worst times in history to join the military. Constant budget cuts, sequestrations, BRACs are happening. Def don't join the army, they're being hit the hardest.

    Learn a trade.

ECB, there are so many ways to get a free associates if you want to put the time in online. inbox me for some suggestions, not fool proof guarantees but ways to try and make it work if you are interested

A trade is a good idea, you could also learn code (Java python etc) for free so long as you are motivated to do so

if you want apples later, you need to plant the seeds NOW

the only reason I didnt drop out of college is cause phish wasnt touring, glad they took a break so I could get sh!t done as there was NOTHING better for me to do than plug away at a degree

Also, when people choose to make the decision to join the military its usually because they are really bad at making decisions and they have no choice left

school isn't for everyone. Think of all those are pushed into college by parents who don't take the time to find out what their kids are interested in or good at...they drop out. It ends up being an extremely expensive party.

You might be more of a "trade" type. Follow your instincts because if your parents didn't make the effort to know the real you (not what they fantasize you to be or become), don't think anyone else is going to care, either.

as far as the navy or CG, I don't know how easy it is to get stationed wherever you want, especially the first few years. Believe it or not, there's a lot of navy bases that are hundreds of miles inland (landlocked). The CG might base you in a relatively surfless place like the gulf of mex, the great lakes or...new england.

Same here on the Phish thing. Had a lot of fun those years.
But I disagree about the military comment. A lot of people want to serve their country and that's their main motivation... And my friends that served have great jobs now.

Without reading all this- I would advise from personal experience- go back to school - a tech school- and enjoy it while you can. Once you start working - you cannt stop till your like 75... Unless you move to Central America. In ten years you'll look back and wish you had gotten the degree you started comparing to others who got it...

    Go
    Back
    To
    School

...and do it like a man, not a child. Statistically there is a much higher probability you will have more mobility and freedom with an undergraduate degree or certification in specialized tech. The military and coasties will slap any idealized vision you have of them out of your head in the first two hours of basic. You won't be getting much free time for years. Not to mention the Coast Guard is probably the most difficult to get into.

You can do this and take DPS's advice all at the same time! Win-Win...
