either join the service, or get a tech certificate or degree. whatever you choose, commit to it 100%. I was in a similar situation when i was 23 years old... I was either going to join the service, finish my degree, or move out of my folks hse and try to fend for my own w no degree. I cut my social life nearly completelly and finished my last 2 years for a bachelors degree online, while working full time. when i got my degree, i was promoted to a desk job and now live on my own. i stopped chasing girls and drinking to accomplish the goal. you can do it man.

Jeezus H Christmas thanks for that SCREWBY! I got nervous for a minute and thought Wayne had some stuff happen to his brain functioning, didn't even think to read it backwards.

Hay Wayne, did that take long to type it out like that?

Joining a gang of murderers to facilitate the liquidation of resources from foreign countries is morally reprehensible. Whatever they do in one day that takes me 3 days I dont do at all, your faux hero worship of murderers is PATHETIC
and its 'their', not 'they're' numbnuts

A college degree isn't worthless. Yeah, you don't learn anything in college, but it opens up doors to jobs that won't even look at you without it. Actually, soon, if you don't have a Masters you'll be unfit for duty. People who say a college degree is worthless are people who watch too much That 70's Show and are bitter. They feel somewhat lesser......Like the education you get at Harvard really isn't 20x better than Boston College, but you become part of a "club" and that opens up jobs that the BC grad could never get.

Ahhh, it's all who you know in this world.....connections and sh!t. So start farming connections. Develop a sweet personality.......

Though, the college degree gets you jobs that are totally contradictory to the surfing lifestyle.......

One could watch Blacklist on NBC(I think) and learn to become a super, international crime guy who knows everybody and everything. That would be cool. Ahh man, you'd know everything and always be one-step ahead of everyone.. That would be nice. Being all tricky and all-knowing......

Anyways school is easy, man. Go to a few classes a day.......get a winter break.....summers off........Try and get people to touch it.......drink............It's fantastic. Why pass that up? Remember trade types are all substance dependent by the time they're thirty....

And joining the Coast Guard may have you ending up like Atlantic O .........twenty years from now you'll be sitting naked at a computer in your basement attacking everyone on surf predictin' websites.

Not bitter. I have 2 degrees and make a very good living but the years of just getting any degree and making it are over, You have to specialize and even then a liberal arts degree is not worth what it used to be. About 3 or so years ago, it was published that the cost of a degree is not worth the benefit for the first time in history.

what do you want from your life?

are you looking to make enough dough to build a compound in costa rica and a jet to fly to to and fro, or are you looking to make enough dough to own a modest house close enough to decent surf and also have enough free time to see your wife and teach your kids how to surf?

i'm not saying one's better than the other, and each route has its benefits. if you're looking for a lifestyle where you "work to live" rather than "live to work" there are a zillion things you can do to make the money you need to make and still be in the water.

if you were my son, i'd find a buddy who is a carpenter, HVAC, electrician, or builder and ask if you could be his "apprentice" for 3 months, during which time you work for him for pretty much free (maybe he buys lunch and a cold one once in a while) and you get to see if it's for you. now these guys earn their money. they work hard and they put up with plenty of customers' sh!t, but they also have some flexibility that an accountant, teacher, or salesman might not have.

if one of the trades is for you, learn it and get an associates degree with some business background at the same time. even if you're the most talented carpenter in town, you still have to run a payroll, price out your work, balance your books and the other boring things that business owners have to do.

take it one step at a time, be humble and gracious to those lifting you up and keeping you going in the right direction and you'll be fine.

as PBJ mentioned, a college degree is often times necessary to be considered for certain jobs. at the same time, a liberal arts or communications major is not as valuable as it used to be (glad i got a bachelor of science in business). as far as college degrees go, masters degrees are becoming more sought after now, and in a sense the bar has been raised in the crappy economy. employers are looking for proven skills/focus or performances at prior jobs. Therefore, knowing a trade and coming out of trade school with much less debt is valuable and could be a smart alternative as opposed to a liberal arts or communications degree (as others have mentioned) my buddy has a communications degree from a party school and he landscaped for 5 years after he got his degree...now hes just a liquor promotor...

Pump, I know it sounds like I was referring to you but I wasn't....

Here's the deal......saw you discredited the college degree.......
Thought of Red from That 70's show.......
Then I said what I said........though I was distracted at the time and it came out like it did

MIS-13......He is everybody's God, not just Wayne. Besides, God doesn't like vans.

Socrates and Plato believed in a deity. Are you proclaiming to know more than them? Ha, you probably don't even wear a robe.

They're no atheists in the impact zone.

I mean how do you think Phish became successful? That was a pure miracle....

Oh shoot, you never responded to my last post on the First Black Friday thread....I was waiting for new-aged enlightenment but it never came.

I'm gonna have to agree with this particular statement and some of the other ones that advise on going to school-of some kind. Learn something. Learn a trade or skill set yes, but also learn how to think. The military will only teach you what to think not how to think. We got enough sheep on this Animal Farm called the U.S. of A.
