new to me longboard is 9'. It came with a 2+1 fin setup, but the main fin looks like black plastic, and the smaller fins look like glass. it looks like its the stock fins. The board is epoxy by ricky carrol. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Go single or stay with all 3?
going single or sticking w/ all 3 is entirely up to you...personally, i prefer my longboards set up as a single fin. if you decide to go that route, try the true ames greenough 4a at about 9". my favorite fin for singles ever, no matter the length.
depends what you want to do if you wanna glide and do noserides get a 10 inch flex drive or pivot fin. If you want do quick turn and rip it keep it as a 2+1 the bigger fin will help you catch more small stuff and give you more drive down the line the down fall is depending on the style of fin and size you cant turn it on a dime
i had used a borrowed 9'2 and a 9'6 , both had a single fin and were fiberglass, and I agree you can't turn on a dime on those, but the drive down the line was sweet. how does the center fin position (forward-back) make a difference in performance?
ok, anyone have suggestions for a 2+1 setup? I have stock fins and don't mind upgrading to make it pretty. I can't seem to find any 2+1 combos.
I don't ride mine with 2+1, but this fin makes for an awesome single fin. I have the 9" one though; http://shop.waterboyz.com/browse.cfm/4,14790.html
thanks. does anybody sell the side fins? i can't seem to find them online. i'm sure the ones I have are fine enough, but you know damook like bling.
Fcs? If they're FCS or Futures you should be able to order them right from the website.. http://www.surffcs.com/en/products/fins/longboard/gx.aspx
most shops should have side fins for sale in both futures & fcs, possibly lok-box & a couple other more obscure fin systems if you're lucky. but futures & fcs side bites should be no trouble at all to locate.
Check the rocker. If it has more rocker throughout, it'll most likely ride good as a 2+1. If it's flatter, particularly in the entry area, it might ride better as a single. This is just one indication of the intent of the design... there are a lot more. But this is a start in determining what the designer had in mind. The simple fact that it's set up for a 2+1 also says something, but sometimes those things are done to get more interest in making a purchase. Rocker, bottom contours, rails, template, and tail tell much more. My favorite 2+1 setup is an 8" fiberglass cutaway with sidebites. Center fin in the center of the box to start, then tweak it from there. Welcome to longboarding!
I've got a Wingnut cutaway with my 2+1 setup on a 9'0 HP LB. By far the best setup I've experienced with this board over 12 years playing with fins. ~Brian www.greenlightsurfsupply.com
thanks for the welcome. I didn't think longboarding was going to overtake my shortboarding, but I really like it, and my local break is a much better longboard wave anyway. I just feel bad for everyone else who has to watch me take all the waves
