Anyone else see the last issue of Surfer magazine? They had the top ten best surfing towns in the country. They based it on breaks, income, vibe and other things.Mantauk was ranked 7th and Ocean City N.J. was ranked 10th. I Surfed Ocean City Saturday before I saw this ranking. It was really good but to rank it in the top 10 in the county I thought that was generous..
NJ doesn't have the best breaks in the country, but they got some of the best vibe. People are always stoked here.
Va beach had to be top 3 , first street's vibe is so great and we got 17th street and Peabody's and world class waves cant beat it any where
They are? Being born and raised in NJ I think next to new york we have the ****tiest people/attitudes out of anyplace in the US. Compared to the west coast the east cost is a totally different vibe and mind set. People are deff more mellow out west.
Not sure if this is sarcasm or not but no ,VB did not make the list. The East Coast towns were: KDH(NC), Montauk, Ocean City (NJ), and New Smyrna Beach FL
yes, i agree Mr. Swellinfo. just went up to OCNJ last weekend to pick up a new board and was kinda caught out guard by the great surf vibes. i only really surf OC in the winter/spring, and last weekend they had a contest, there were mad people out everywhere, i think it deserved the No.10 spot.
I havent run into pissed off people in the lineup and I surf in between long branch and bay head. I guess it depends on how the waves are and if you drop in on someone at the peak to get people fired up. casino pier and jenks are little tougher spots, but just need to wait your turn and it's all good. show respect and no angry people.
i think it really depends where you surf in oc nj. there tend to be the more assholish people on the north end and nicer people on the southern end. 8th st and 7th st are for shoobies.
Without reading the article, common sense would say at least 4or5 out of 10 should be California towns? Any town chosen on the outerbanks of NC is fine by me (to me this has a great surfing vibe more than anywhere up here in the mid-Atlantic region), and of course at least 1-2 Florida towns since they have so much coastline and urban areas along the coast. Quality breaks, income and vibe as their rimarly selection criteria...all are subjective and what does income/standard of living have to do with a quality surf town? You can have rich or poor communities...if the local community has a good surfing vibe that resonates in the local culture, I personally don't see the coorelation.
Actually, you wouldn't believe the amount of aholes out in the water over here on the west coast in SoCal. I mean, I'm sometimes one of them, lol, however I seem to recall that anytime I've had a friend from the east coast come out and surf with me, they are by far the most stoked in the water. I love surfing with you guys from the east coast. You're all far less jaded and get stoked much more easily. Encinitas in SD was on there. That's an incredible little surf town. I would love to live there if it was not for my job up here in Ventura. SC was also on there... twice! Santa Cruz & San Clemente. San Clemete is my second choice after Encinitas for a nice surf town in CA to live. Both are pretty mellow, nice vibes, everybody knows everybody kinda towns.
downside of OC, NJ is that for post-session beers you need to either drive to a liquor store go to a bar outside of town as the township is dry.
yeah i surfed the north end last weekend... some real pissed off people up there dont know why... they werent locals though maybe thats why they were pissed and 7th definitely is one of the most crowded in the summer i cant stand surfing there unless its fall or winter.. even then i hardly surf 7th
