I am a lower level Intermediate surfer and currently ride a 9'6" longboard. I want to move into a small faster board that is easier to turn and was considering the 7s Superfish II or McTavish Bobsled 6'6" to 7'0". Any opinion on which board, the length, or other suggestions? I typically go to Matunuck Beach, RI or the lighthouse in Pt. Judith.
It's always good to have options, keep riding that LB, but I would pick up something a step between a shorty and LB, which I did myself a couple years ago. I grew up surfing a 6' 4" Bat but as i got older and heavier i moved up to a 6' 10" WRV Fun Fish which is perfect for the East Coast when the surf gets larger than waist, but after developing shoulder issues I stepped it up and picked up an 8' 1" McTavish perfomance LB and i love it, it's got just enough foam, but yet very easy to whip around and duckdive / turtle. The past year i got a SUP and have found it to be the best thing to happen to my surfing as i catch more waves than ever and i'm able to transition back and forth between the boards better. So having a small, med, large board setup is ideal, you'll progress so much more IMO
DawnPatrolSUP, Thanks for the insight. I was looking at the McTavish Caver also. Which McTavish do you have?
i picked up the 8 Ball at a Quiet Flight shop on S. Cocoa Beach, gorgeous board and fun in most conditions
the superfish 2 looks pretty sweet. I am 6'2", 195 to 210 throughtout the year and the superfish xl 7'3" works great at my size. I believe the newer superfish2 has a slightly more pronounced rocker and some new bottom contours. If I had the spare cash laying around I would be tempted to pick one up.
I am in the same boat and would love to know what people think of those 2 boards. I ride an 8' but went on a recent trip where I definitely needed something smaller and faster. I realize I will probably use my bigger board 70% of the time but need something when it gets to be head high but still easy to catch waves.
I have the 7S superfish original. It is super fun and fast but takes a little getting used to especially coming from surfing a LB. I surf the 5'9 and Im 6'1 175lbs. Just make sure you find the one that will perform the way you want. 6'6-7'0 is pretty big, I bet if you try out the 6'0 or slightly bigger youll love it!
