    Hello,

I took a surfing lesson with my son last week in Destin, FL. We also tried it another day, but had a tougher time then. I'm really curious about some things like:

    • Ocean Weather and how it relates to surfing
    • Wave Selection
    • General advice and tips

I'm a reader and would love to read a book about this stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations for books that would cover those things, and also might cover some other beginner topics?

    Thanks!

    Don't know aboot books, but

Wave selection/knowledge can only be gained by actually surfing. No book can teach you that.

Forget the books and learn by trial and error. Or trail and era.

    And have fun.

Watch The Weather Channel constantly. Well, they have original programming on during primetime unless somebody's going to get tornadoes or snowed upon. But watch when they are doing weather stuff.

Dude basically the east coast goes like so:

The winds switch onshore as a front approaches.

    Onshores build surf...

Storm leaves area, and winds switch around offshore. Surf cleans-up..

That's basically the east coast in it's most simple form.

Taj burrows hot book of surfing is decent if your set on that route.

The Internet has a wealth of information.

Talking to the old salts is certainly the best way to go.

Glad to hear you and your son are taking on the waves together. Together you will rule the galaxy

As far as wave selection, take the ones the seagulls call you in to.

Outside of actually going surfing, go the visual route instead of books. Find videos on the web that will cover the topics you listed.

Best "tips" video I've ever seen was "surfing 110% vol.2". Focuses on good technique...great video and very helpful. (Volume #1 talks more about general surfing basics...2has more technical surfing). Have fun...

Your first post--you need to submit an "introduction" post...about yourself, pictures of your GF, naked, of course, car you drive, income, and other assorted relevant information.
Read "War & Peace". That is what it is like learning to surf....long and drawn out....years to get there.

    toodle le do!!

Yeah and how about that hello thread with stuff like shotting piers , bangin hindus and a pre surf video routine.

Great Gaffer, now this dude(OP) will become bitter and disappear somewhere.........

And he might not have Mr. Weisbecker's smuggling, world-savy street smarts....

I just love AW, by the way. He's my hero after Howard Stern. And I don't have heroes so that's pretty impressive.

Read Kook by Peter Heller, about his adventure learning how to surf. Watch lots of videos, surf every week so you learn about the ocean and it's conditions by experience... nothing replaces time in the water.

And let's not forget Daniel Duane's classic beginner surfer/God I'm lonely I need a girl book.......

    I can't remember it's name. LOL

If you are lonely, a kook, and like too much description of Californian shrubbery get on it. Nahh, it's a decent book. He makes a few flaws giving away some dishonesty, but it is what it is. One minute he's pearling on two footers, the next day he's stroking into double overhead...

Hey !! He sounds like this community right here !! LOL ROFL LMAO BRB YOLO ahhhh, IMHO, ummm ahhh I can't think of anymore right now. Yeah dudes I don't text or drive.

(Daniel Duane used to contribute to Surf Mags. Every piece featured him complaining aboot his girl situation. Daniel is very needy apparently).
