A few weeks ago my wife and I went to Cape May.I was armed with my board but it seemed like it was mostly a shorebreak.Without giving any hotspots out is it mainly like that down there.

cape may is a very fickle place to surf. It is very tide dependent. But, it can be good with the right swell direction, winds, and tides.

It depends what jetty you go to. Most people with say it doesnt matter but it does. Cape may is a very tide dependent spot like said by Swellinfo. It can be doing one thing at The Cove but a few jettys down it can be the complete oposite

One great thing about cape may is the shape you can fine tune the wind to what you need by driving north or south.

Sounds like you really have to be a local to know whats going down .Went to Ocean City N.J. in the spring Parked the truck and bang found a great break there.

i went there a few weeks ago for my last session before ankle surgery. I definitely saw a lot of shorebreak, but did find a nice spot. It did kind of disappear for a little bit with the tide.

<3 cape may, so much fun on the right swell. i learned to surf in cape may/grew up spongin there. When I was first learning how waves/swell work I would sometimes see the buoy's reading 4-6 ft, thinking that cape may would HAVE to be getting waves, so i'd check it out. FLAT! haha that was back before I knew anything and also before the advent of most of the web sites i use now, sans surfline.

    South?

Right, like Cape May Point ever breaks without a tanker going up the bay.

There is alot more curve to cape may than to OC. That is what I meant you can make it work alot more in cape may if there is a swell to work with.
The attachments are google earths of both.

That what I mean when is can be totally different from one beach to another in Cape May . Sometimes The Cove acts as a buffer and will clean up if other beaches north of it are a bit on the bumpy side

Having grown up and learning to surf there some 20 years ago (before moving north), saying it's fickle is a bit of an understantement. If you don't know the wind, tide, swell combo...you are screwed! However, it can, and does, become a phenominal break on the right combo. Anyone that remembers the old Poverty Beach before the beach replenishment can attest to this. It kicked your butt if you bit it, but was totally worth it.

I do remember. Poverty would be so hollow and clean and break in about 3 inches of water. Talk about a neck breaker

Not to mention the broken clam shells and shorebreak that snuck up on you.

    Cape May Beaches

Poverty always sucked out in the late fifties and early sixties, way before any McMansions were built there (giving lie to the name "Poverty") way before anyone even dreamed that beach repelenishment was a possibility. But truth be told, with the possible exception of Hurricane Donna coming straight up from the south, I've never seen Cape May Point actually produce a surfable wave. Too much magnesite in the water. Are you telling me it breaks there now? If so, I've GOT to see it in person.

    Poverty

Poverty beach is called, "the beach of a thousand faces" dont believe me ask loudini...anywayz, any dredgin they did or have dun just runs out, to much pushes thru there, i love that break, prolly my favorite of all time surfin it wit Dave, and Mikey, and all the boys....my heart will always be in P-OV-ER-TY....say it slow and broken up it sounds spanish...as for when u wanna dismount the wave there, just jump off ur board and run on the sand is always an alternative to goin over the otherside...I still have my Poverty board...its a lil momento..lol...ROB/MATT JOHNSON...Keep up ur crap and i'll slap u thru the wall like last year...lol
