Chasing Mavericks

untrue...it was small as hell Sat. am and really shallow, nailed my chin into the sandbar and tweaked my back a little...not fun...giving thanks & praise it didn't end up a painful experience.

I fell asleep a hour into the movie

haters gonna hate, the movie was interesting enough

 

any movie coming out of H-wood that involves surfing is better than the usual crap they put out. As surf movies go .... this is a good one.

Made me want to go to Steamer lane and jump off that cliff !!!

 

Never seen the movie. Never should have made a movie aboot that Jay dude. There's no movie there. No story. No movie.

Y'all know how Jay Moriarity got famous, right? He had a spectacular wipe-out in front of the right cameras. Offshores held him up in the lip and pitched his board in the air and ...............then magazine covers, sponsorship and international fame. All from one wave.......a wipeout on one wave...........then eventually a movie. Life's funny ain't it?

I'd rather they do a movie on Randall...... you know,...Lost's mascot.

And interestingly enough, small waves aren't considered dangerous but in actuallity, factuallity small waves account for 98% of surf injuries. Big waves usually break in deep water so you really just have to be able to hold your breath. I hope you can because I can't.

Yeah, Pipe and Chopes are big and shallow but you shouldn't be out on those waves anyways. Stick to C Street. Not the one in Ventura, but Southern North Carolina. Don't go to Ventura. I lived in the Ventura area 1984-1997 after I got out of the Navy. Been back on work-related travel several times since. I think it was watching those gray-haired guys at Surfers Point by the Fairgrounds during my early morning runs that helped encourage me to start surfing. That area used to be a big windsurfing spot as well. Now, kite surfing is popular there.

 

I thought the movie was pretty retarded. having said that Jay Moriarity (RIP) defintely has a massive ball sack and it sucks the way he died but again the movie was trying to be dramatic and everyone overacted. not sure on how factually correct it was. so the first time he paddled out to mavericks he caught the set of the day. I find that hard to believe since he had no big wave experience but it is hollywood. **** i wish there was surf so I did not have to write on these forums. haha

 

The actor who played Frosty, definitely was a bit on the over dramatic side, but who knows, maybe thats how he was... I was entertained by the movie.

This youtube tribute vid to him, actually shows that Mavericks ride where he got caught in the lip. It was definitely pretty gnarly, but that clip they used of the wipeout in Chasing Mavericks was way too unreal - no one would have survived that.

I hear your arguments that Jay's life waovie worthy but the proof is in the pudding. How many 16 year olds (barely able to drive probably in 10thade) are attempting to charge Mav's with water temps hovering around 40-50°, ice cream headaches, men in the gray suits, inside rocks/boulders, fluctuating take-off spots, and last butnot least wave heights that produce are big enough to hold a BIG wave contest and just recently killed pro Sion Milssosky (who was a very experienced Waterman who I'm sure could hold his breath for around 4 minutes or so. With all that being said it is very impressive to see the dedication that it takes to be able to charge these types of waves. I think the movie is very inspiring for paddle-in, hardcore big wave guys. Just like Blue Crush was for the ladies (which was a very poor movie graphic wise) Chasing Mav's is one of the most realistic surf movies to come.out since Endless Summer. Yeah no movie is ever PERFECT and I did notice some flaws but can anyone else have a in-theather worth, worldwide surf movie in their honor??? Kelly Slater: A young Floridian begins to win contests and doesn't stop for a few years?? Plus he already got his fame. Andy Irons: A true Hawaiian who competes with his brother growing up and pulls through to win a Title?? Could work until he dies from getting high.. I'm sure there's some good ideas out there so yeah lets hear some. My point is that he paddled out at Mav's at 16 ! Yeah he got a wipeout covershot but heck I know everyone on these forums would take it. This is my first post/first day. I moved out westfrom Ft Lauderdale a year ago and its just as flat! Chasing Maverick's is an instant classic. It told Jay's story growing up with a single mom who was alcoholic, and the trials their family faced in a town that has a huge divide between well off and working class. The movie was visually stunning, and the cast was chosen perfectly. With Santa Cruz being the backdrop, it was awesome the way the movie made the region the focus. Cold, beautiful, and wet. Is what comes to mind when I think of Santa Cruz. I lived in Norcal for several years, and being from Texas I found the place to be amazing. Throughout the movie I was seeing places I passed through or stopped at. I appreciated the fact that Greg Long was in the movie. He is the best big wave rider and has mad credit. That wave of Mavericks will never be tamed and the surfers who choose to ride it, flirt with death. That's the appeal, I guess. Mavericks will forever be the Green Giant on a lonely coast. Jeff Clark surfed it for 15 years by himself before it was leaked to the masses. And maybe thats who Gerald Butler was portraying in the movie. Chasing Maverick's is a surf movie with many elements to it. The struggles of addiction, and dealing with death, and processing our fears and how friendship turns to love and respect. I learn something new every time I watch it. "Paddle, paddle, paddle, little grom!" " Little Trash! Ride and Glide.

 

To answer your first question: 25 and that's only Mavericks teens. If you factor in other areas such as Hawaii and shoot, there are 162, 16-year-olds who ride large surf.
