"The highest levels are found in barracuda, but it is also found in grouper, amberjack, hogfish, snapper, sea bass, mackerel and mahi-mahi. Neither cooking nor freezing affects the toxin."

"Fish caught in colder northern waters are unlikely to be have the toxin, she said, but the risk is not zero, because fish migrate.

The illness, often called just “fish poisoning,” is well known in areas around warm water in the Caribbean, the South Pacific and the Indian Ocean, she said. A survey Dr. Radke did in St. Thomas, V.I., found that 25 percent of all residents had experienced it, and half of those had had symptoms that lasted more than three months."

in the last 100 years the staple food source for much of the world, since the beginning of man kind, becomes toxic...

Either the big beef/poultry corpos are feeding us bs or we really are killing the planet. either way its sad

I have known about ciguatera for about 55 years.....nothing new, Zzzzz....Zzzzzz...
That because we used to catch lots barrycudas whilst we lived in PR. Otherwise, I would be as ignorant as you are about this subject. Now, back to napping.......Zzzzz

Stay away from barracuda, and the odds go from 1 in a half million to 1 in about five million. I never eat barracuda, so I'll take my chances.

As you know, I tend to side with science and data. And there is plenty of data showing the numerous ways man is harming the natural ecosystem.
On a somewhat related note, I have eaten fish of all types (well, prob not Barracuda) for years, and I have only been sick two times from it. I got food poisoning in Chicago, after eating squid sushi with ink sack. I also became fairly ill after consuming not so fresh mussels.

I caught one in Indo from the boat. Not a big one, but big enought to cook up for dinner. No ill effects yet.

With my fishing skills I would snatch your ass right. You wouldnt be able to resist.

Let u flop around on the boat for awhile, striving for H20. Slit yo gills and watch u bleed out. Then toss yo stinky ass back to sea for your other Barracuda pals to eat u up.

    Have a nice day Barry!

Never been sickened by seafood it's the chicken that has gotten me. Salmonella poisoning ain't no fun.

Ate too many oysters and drank too much beer one new years eve. They came out the same way they went in, one at a time.New years day was brutal. Live and learn.

    Funny story about oysters...
Me and my brother are at the Borgota, he ended up winning a ton on roulette and takes me to one of the restaurants to eat like a king (before he gives it all back).

Walking up to the counter, he see's the guy cleaning out the oysters and says, "Wait! We'll Take them all!"
We got about 3 dozen between both of us. Both got really sick for about 2 days.

    First & last time
