is there really much difference between an egg and a funboard? I currently exlusively ride a longboard 9.6 and really don't go out in anything much over waist high. I have been thinking about getting something short that would be good in small waves and was suggested either an egg or fish. But was wondering what the difference between an egg and funboard is? Funboard's seemed to be a little longer(in the 7" range rather then 6")? egg's are maybe thicker and wider? and have more of a rounded or pintail shape? Do I have this right? If so what is the difference in how they ride? thanks.

eggs are, well, generally shaped like an egg, & designed w/ a specific purpose in mind...going fast & maintaining performance. they typically have lower rocker, full rails, & as you noted, a round tail or rounded pintail. they can be any fin set up...single, thruster, quad, bonzer, etc...eggs will range in size from 5'5" or smaller up to near longboard length, 8'8" or so. the term "funboard" is probably one of the worst surf terms to crop up during the most recent surf boom; it doesn't really describe anything...shouldn't ALL surfboards be fun? the proper term is "midlength"...aka: boards that aren't quite longboards & aren't quite shortboards. the usage of the term "funboard" started as a term of derision when beginners &/or aging surfers began using boards outside of the standard shortboard/longboard lengths as crutches to help them catch more waves w/ less effort. in other words: an egg can be a midlength, but a midlength isn't always an egg. of course, to some people, anything not a standard 3 fin hpsb will always be a "funboard". eggs of various sizes: funboard/midlength:
Do yourself a favor and ride your longboard in some big waves. You're gonna take some on the nose getting out there but thats part of the fun. Staying in waist and below on your board is like never making it out of 3rd gear. Why are you limiting yourself? A new board won't make you a better surfer but challenging yourself in different situations will.
ohh I'll chime in here. eggs are shortboards that are similar in volume to funboards but are shorter and more compact. Eggs are easier to make turns on while funboards are easier to paddle and stand up on. Depends on your intended use, are you new to surfing? Get a funboard or a log. Are you a proficient surfer looking for a way to take new lines? Try an egg. Some people surf them super small like 5' but I like them about the same length of my shorty so that I can get into waves early. the extra volume at no added length can be a BLAST. Plus, a good single fin egg with a pin tail can be ridden in large surf if you have the nbuts to tote.
If you have never ridden anything except for a longboard, then I would suggest going for the fun board because the egg would probably be harder for you to initially get up on and the only real advantage is its ability to go fast in small waves and still be maneuverable.
Thanks this is helpful. Actually my interest came from a suggestion at a shop when I mentioned I was thinking about trying something new and shorter. I was in ca. and had seen this women carving some really nice and mellow lines, mostly way inside from where I was on my log, on what seemed to be a single fin egg. I actually have two "funboards" (one 7'6" and one 8") which I don't ride too much, I actually started on the 7'6" and went up 8, 9, 9.6. I'm interested in trying something different. clemonsurf I was recently in socal and most of the days there were waist plus with some chest and shoulder sets. especially the day I went to San O, that was fun because getting out was not difficult, with such long period swells and areas that don't break, to get around to the set, the waves are so mellow there that I was able to get comfortable in bigger waves. But you are right it's time to take up here (east coast) as well even though it's a little less forgiving.

I have to agree with NJSurfer: A funboard is marketed as a do-it-all, rounded nose board with a variety of rails & tails and usually a thruster. The egg usually has a less-full nose, with the widest at the midpoint, a round (or rounded pin) tail, a variety of fin configurations and pretty flat rocker. While most "core" surfers have a distain for funboards, I had a 7'8" George Robinson that was my go-to board for years. Eventually, the glass became brittle and the board fell apart. I tried to replace it with a few other fundboards, but they never came close. I agree with whoever said to keep your longboard...especially if you stick to smaller waves. The timing in paddling for waves changes with a small board and if you normally don't shortboard, you may find the experience frustrating. Just my humble opinion. One last thing, stay away from the "big-guy" tri's that advertise they catch waves like a longboard and ride like a shortboard. Trust me....they don't.
A so called "funboard" in my experience is the worst of both worlds. A single fin egg will provide the paddle ability, takeoff, glide and trim you're lookin fer.. it's a design that works. Go with the egg!
Yeah the Eggs are the real deal! Those (GH) Gary Hanel boards are ridiculously nice. Grab one of those and keep it forever. If ya can't afford one of his, get a local shaper to build one like it.
Eggs seem to be the trend right now and they rock. I've been using a fish hybrid for some time as my all around board. does everything i want big, small, mush, no see 'ems.
