I'm goofy footed and I hit the top of my left foot on the tail when I pop-up about 75% of the time. It hurts like hell and I end up having to take a knee before I stand. It also throws me off considering I'm a noob and it breaks my concentration. Any suggestions? Maybe a drill I could do on land to help. Anything will be helpful.
You're either starting out way too far back (toward the tail) on your board, your board is too short for you to learn on, or you're just plain doing it wrong. I think it's supposed to go something like: Plant both hands on the rails and start a push up with your back arched. Bend your front leg and plant your foot as you push up and let go with your hands. Your back foot should be where its supposed to be and you stand up.
Thanks man. I'm about to go out. Ill check my position because I think I may have been too far back. I'm 5'10" with a 6'2" board, is that too short?
That's way too short of a board for a beginner. You should be starting out on a longboard in the 8 to 10 foot range. Bigger is better when you're starting out, especially on small Florida waves.
I understand the board is a little short. I've always been good at board sports and I surfed a little when I was younger. I figure it will just be harder to learn but I will get it eventually. I think I was just too far back. Now my biggest problem is being in the right spot to catch a wave.
I spring off my back foot when popping up. It's more like a step up. It doesn't look as bad as it sounds.
It's ok notjamee. I can tell that your life is horrible and the only satisfaction that you get in life is from trolling forums. Yet maybe, if you tried being positive, you may be able to move out of your parents basement, meet a girl, find a job, and not feel like you need to berate people through forums. Though, if name calling is all thats keeping you from shooting up a school or child snatching, keep on doing it. We here at Swellinfo will take a hit for the team to ensure the safety of everyone around you.

Thanks. Ive been practicing with my feet sticking up in air and that has helped alot. The problem was that I kept trying to use my feet to pop up instead of my knees. Now that Ive been practicing like that I havent hit my foot once.
