I was at indian river inlet today for the first time since the fall and though I was there at low tide it seemed to be breaking much more on shore then every other time I've been there. is this just me? is it seasonal and or have to do with the piping of sand around?

It was the sand pumping. Sucks tho. Used to break 50 yds out even at 1 ft. On a big day its prob good.

Oh that is what I thought. Yeah it was knee to waist yesterday which usually easily break much further out but just was not. How often do they do that sand pumping and can we reasonably expect it to adjust back, perhaps with a few storms?

they pump sand from the south side to the north side all winter long... have been doing so for many years now.

So if they do that every year then it should naturally regulate back after they stop pumping for a while? or does it take a few storms?

I usually find that storms make that place worse. Gets deep spots and weird rips. It breaks so good in the summer after lots of south wind flattness.

As Swellinfo said, they have been pumping sand 9 months of the year for 20 years now. June, July and August are the only months they stop.

Other than a couple hurricane swells last summer that absolutley fired, everyone seems to agree its been pretty deep and weak there for the last year of two.

Usually by the end of the summer, the sand builds back up against the south side jetty... hence they have to continue to do this every year. The longshore drift naturally brings sand from south to north in Delaware. Many years back it used to be very shallow against the jetty all summer long, but it hasn't been like that in the past 5 years or so. I think it has to do with where they are pumping.

The indian river inlet has been a nightmare for the Army Corps of Engineers, with respect to the problems with the bridge and the necessity to continually pump every year.

thanks this is all very helpful, i'm glad to know that there is every chance that the break will get better, hopefully before the summer crowds. since I am still learning I have liked that spot because it breaks nicely even when it is small.

The spot is dead. Don't ever go there again it's not worth your time. Tell all the people that come in the summer too.

    Northside

I went to Northside IR today at low tide. It should have been perfect but everything was breaking on the beach. It certainly wasn't this bad last year. Even early in the year. So where are the longboarder's surfing these days? Is Assateague back to what it was 2 years ago?

I heard that the local sand sharks were eating all the sand and pooping it back out at assateague.
