Today apparently the lifeguards told surf shops not to rent out boards because it was too rough. They didn't even want people boogie boarding, but would let people boogie board if they had fins and actually checked to see if boogie boarders were wearing fins...the surf was around waist high with rip currents? Is this typical or something new? I understand safety first, and I do see where they are coming from with the fins, but advising surf shops not to rent out boards on a waist high day? Isn't that a bit much? Do they only want you out there in knee high surf?
it was waist to shoulder yesterday - and I would assume the problem isn't the surf, it's the amount of people. There were literally about 80 people in the water at Lincoln yesterday - my guess is they don't want people who most likely don't know what their doing (if they're renting boards - not saying you don't, just saying in general) because with that many people in the water with surf that is more powerful than usual it can be very dangerous.
Where do all these people go when its 10 degrees out and firing??? Guess there aren't many locals around there...........
well the problem is during the summer there's pretty much only one surfing jetty - they close most of the other ones for swimming. That's what causes the ridiculous traffic jam. After September 3rd, you can surf at any of them with no problem.
Is it always that crowded on weekends? Is any time of day less crowded? I am guessing it is better during the week. Also, is there any way to find out if they are restricting things like renting surf boards or boogie boarding in general in advance? It didn't look like they really posted anything on their website or anything.
I've said this a bunch of times, but go early or go late and you don't have to deal with restrictions or crowds. Most of the summer surf crowd is too lazy/drunk to get up early and has already begun partying after 6 pm. Surf shops might not be open so you could be SOL as far as renting boards goes. I've never tried to rent a board here, but I can't believe the beach patrol can restrict private businesses from doing business. I don't think they'll announce it if they do. Two more weeks of this crap...can't wait until it's over and we get some real waves sans kooks.
By early do you mean before 9am when the lifeguards go on duty? It is strange because I went last year during labor day weekend, and it wasn't nearly as crowded and they let everyone do their thing without any problem, but this year they were so strict! However, I have only been there twice when the beach patrol was there, and I was shocked at how different things were the second time around! That is why I was wondering if this was normal for them. If this predicted swell comes, I am debating going sunday or monday. I am starting to think that getting there early on a monday might be best, and if I can't rent a board, just boogie board to enjoy the swell. But it is crazy! And on such a high swell day, that is a huge loss of business to not be able to rent out boards! I do understand where they are coming from with crowds and kooks, but the reality is there are people 1. who live in small nyc apartments and can't exactly store a longboard anywhere. And if we so rarely get to go to the beach, it doesn't really make sense to go out and buy one. 2. Who want to try out a new type of board before they buy it. or 3. who normally longboard and only own that, but wanted to switch to shortboarding on a day where the waves are big enough to enjoy it. and 4. There are kids who have parents that got them a surfboard as a present and are totally new to surfing and don't know what they are doing as well!
swell=people who know what they are doing. rent your boogie board and go bay side! we dont need a tea bagger blocking real surfers
sadly, the attitude of the above two posters is oftentimes the vibe in the water at long beach. It's pretty sad.
I mean get out there around sunrise. There will be people out, but nothing like during the day once the surf beach regulations get enforced. I'm not from Long Beach and don't consider myself a local there, but I surf there a fair amount and haven't really experienced much of this vibe at all. There are a couple of jerks out there, but no worse than anywhere else I've surfed. If you're not a kook, have some idea of what you're doing, and treat the locals with respect, you're not going to run into any issues.
This is true; a lot of the regulars (especially in the early morning) are very friendly. I've seen some guys get reamed hard though over petty issues though... some people don't know how to enjoy the sport it seems and instead get their fix threatening others.
Fact is, most people that are rude on the interwebs to people they don't know don't have the sack to pull that crap on someone in person. Internet tough guys most likely would get stomped with a quickness. Don't be that dude, that is all...
I've definitely seen this too, but it isn't specific to LB, it's just mutant male surf behavior in general.
what i learned over the years,99% of surfers everywhere are friendly and have a great vibe.its only on the internet they talk sheet and act tough, locals only.i hate that term so much,i dont like to surf where i live because the waves suck.thats why we go on surf trips.i wouldntgo on a surf trip,if i thought locals wouldnt let me surf.you dont excel at surfing,if u only surf your area.treat others as u want to be treated, thats how i was raised.im a quiet guy and most of the time i dont talk in the lineup.dont be an a-hole n drop in on others,or sit on the inside waitin for someone to mow u over, and youll be fine!
Dude....who cares where they go? as long as they go it's fine w/me. 10 degrees and firing is why you got your name aint it? see ya in feb
RESPECT--give it you get it. drop in or snake and you get what you deserve. and "forman" the early a.m. crowd is friendly just for that reason. we respect one another-if you're getting up early enough to be there at sunrise, your gonna be surfing w/ a crew that wants the same thing as you... a couple of nice rides without some a-hole dropping in on them and getting your day started the right way , with a smile and some stoke. Leave all the Macho, king of the beach, big kahuna attitude home. don't burn a local and try saying good morning to someone and i bet you have a much better time. I've also seen the flipside here and seen dudes chased to their car (who deserved it). all it takes is a little RESPECT
What you guys in grade school. Who cares, nobody cares. Just use common sense and stay out of the way. Take your balls out of your momma's purse and act like you know. Well if you don't know, now you know N$gga!
