If you can make it to Aguadilla (10 minutes heading West) you can get some nice lefts at Wilderness. If it is big, it is NOT for the faint of heart or with little experience. Isabela is known for Jobos, probably the crappiest break on the north shore. Lefts there stink. As an edit--the lefts at Wilderness are NOT the main break, but they are fun on a not too big day. This is Wilderness on a large day <grin>
There probably is, but none that I know of. The best left I've ever surfed in PR is Los Tubos... but it's nowhere near Isabella. It's a deep water reef with a boat channel to get out easily and a looooong paddle. Worth the drive, or at least a stop driving from or to the airport in San Juan.
Well, years ago, even long time USA or West Coast surfers used to wonder "why" PR? "Its a nice place to waterski or spearfish", they said. They would fudge their undies if they went out in that.....
middles just a mile up from jobos can get fun just park on the side of the road and hope someone doesn't steal your stuff.
Its been a long time since I've been to Puerto Rico and I honestly can't remember ever taking off and going left on a wave. I remember it as pretty much all really good rights (I'm a regularfoot so that was a good thing). Thinking about my winter travel plans and wondering what lefts there would be for my goofyfoot son. I've surfed Wildeness and Middles on big days and had near death experiences at both places. Got wilderness really big and got held down BAD and bounced off the reef real good once at Middles and was lucky I didn't break my back.
There are lefts at Sandy Beach, especially off the rock outcropping in front of Tamboo, but it’s a mix bag further down the beach (Puntas / Parking lot) but I remember going left plenty. There is a left at Maria’s if you know where to sit, closer to Piston’s and not by 1st peak.
Same here with middles. Got sucked over the falls on a solid day( slow Mo like) and went face/head first into the reef... saw stars, solid gash on my head. Kinda heavy but not terrible
Wildo is my favorite place to escape. And I second that it gets HEAAAVY. There are lefts in the NW area, I had a few lefts at Surfers Beach last month. Middles is cool but the bottom gets sketchy. There are spots all over the area so a little searching and youll find what you are looking for. Esp when the longer N/NW swells come - all the breaks get magical
