I don't know if this is weird but part of surfing for me is getting in the zone. Those first few waves are crucial in determining how my session will go. Finding that rhythm with the ocean. Not to sound OCD but besides my pre-surf rituals it helps to have a song playing in my head. Does anyone else have a constant radio playing in their heads when they surf? If so what has been playing in your head the last few go outs? I have had some weird random ones lately. Today it was the Pixies "monkey gone to heaven" on repeat. Two days ago it was RHCP Mothers Milk album and I started of this week with David Bowie "Modern Love" (not a song I normally associate with double up death pits but it worked). Its doesn't have to be a particular genre or group...in recent memory I've had Stevie Wonder, NOFX, and Wu Tang for some memorable sessions. Anyone else or am I just crazy?

i can see how that would work for someone. for it varies. sometimes i have a song stuck in my head, other times my mind is blank. whatever helps you focus.

i prefer to have a clear, blank mind when i'm surfing. i feel as tho it just allows me to focus on doing what i need to do on the wave. to be "in the moment" if you will. that's what i like about surfing...it lets me escape what's happening on land for a while & just feel the rhythms of the sea & waves.

for me my head has to be blank in the mind but it also has to have a good song warm up before the session if its big out to get me in the crazy mind set and get the testosterone running through the veins. my music would have to be lil wayne he just has the greatest beats especially in 6 foot 7 foot.

LOOSE FIT is some great surf pump up music, reggae rock funk jazz blues. they jam hard myspace.com/loosefitnj or look up facebook LOOSE FIT.
Anyways, i agree with the rhythm in the ocean. gotta get stoked with a good song in your head. cause the bad songs always get stuck in your dome and you cant surf with the bad rhythm in your head

sometimes I inexplicably get a random song in my head like "God Bless the USA" and it will be with me the whole session.

I like thinking of a kind of short riff and just singing that to myself over and over again. I think the repetitive nature of it helps to focus.

when its those smaller days like in the summer or if its just offshore and really clean and nice i listen to devil wears prada or haste the day cuz it pumps me up to go out there and catch as many waves and throw as many moves as i can. however when its those OH and DOH days when its also onshore and really messy and scary i listen to really relaxing stuff like hillsong or thunder 106.3fm cuz it helps me relax and be confident to paddle out

little Tommy Curren drummed with the Who on the dashboard while his mom drove him to the surf, and MP listened to Hendrix. works for me.Who's Next. i like Bob Dylan Highway 61 when going to an annoying, crowded with nasty people break. He verbally tells everyone off for me so I can be silent amidst the miserable bunch of jenks. U2 Joshua Tree.Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers or Get Your Ya-Ya's Out! Talking Heads Remain In Light is surf music to me,or '77,More Songs About Buildings And Food,Fear Of Music.
I like this new band The Drums for a mellow solo beachbreak surf, they are a new, original unafraid talent, admit they can't really play and are pure pop.I especially like cranking stoking tunes the 85 miles down the parkway to sublime Cape May surfs with a bro.

I always listen to music on the way out and at the beach when im suiting up.. normally ive got something like neil halstead or some folk indie rock goin on in my head.. i try to think of something you would hear if you were in central america and the water was actually warm and the waves were glassy... and maybe some heavier stuff when the ocean is choppy like rise against idk..

In the summer, when it's small, reggae. When it's big, or in the winter, (I know I'm showing my age here) Jane's Addiction's Coming Down the Mountain, and a lot of Smashing Pumpkins gets me amped, but any heavy, fast music will do.

When I'm shaping, reggae or jazz. When I'm glassing, Hendrix makes the resin swirls sweeet.

I do but it depends on the conditions. On a small mellow day maybe someting from Matt and Kim or Passion Pit but on a heavy day it can be Pantera or something along those lines

For 20 plus years, this song has remained my favorite all-time pre-surf psyche up anthem. It's called "Try It" by the 80's90's Boston metal-punk geniuses The Bags. When I'm debating in my head whether to attempt a dicey drop, it makes me go for it.

I try and listen to something that will get me amped up just before I paddle out, but half the time I will get some random weird song stuck in my head, and like someone else posted, I'll end up singing or humming the damn thing to myself the whole session.

Sometimes if it's a particularly bad song, and I'm amongst friends, I'll sing it real loud so I can get it stuck in their heads also.

This song always gets me pumped up for a surf:
