Just got back from 4 days in Myrtle. Caught Arthur on HHI then caught the tail end up in Myrtle and surfed all 4 days I was there. The waves were waist to chest every day. This morning was actually chest - head in the morning up in North Myrtle. I was up at 6 Ave North most of the time. Not a bad little area at all, surf wise. There was constant windswell. The tide didn't really affect it much. Aside from having to dodge the lifeguards the whole time and drive a few blocks, I had a great time up there. It wasn't "all time" or anything, but if it's freaking waist to chest everyday up there, man, they don't have it all that bad. I think I probably got lucky. But it was great. As far as the non-surfing stuff, now I know why people have such a poor view of the south. I will post some pics I took later down on "the strip"... Just last night, I saw about 6-7 different pickups, all beat up, no doors, rednecks piled in the back beds. A few had lawn chairs in the beds, but they all had the "Rebel" flag flying high. In 2 years of living on HHI, I have never seen one. I saw all 6 of them within the first 5 minutes of being down there. Saw a few dozens guys with Rebel Flag boardies.... And I guess since East Bound and Down, the Confederate Flag boogie board is actually a big deal there... It was a freak show. Tons of black people. Tons of rednecks flying their flags... Such a weird scene. But the surf was great and we clocked a ton of time with a lot of family. My wife's younger cousins were playing in a Cal Ripken invitation there. Sick facility.... Haven't been there since I was a kid... Had a blast though... good times. Lots of booze. Walking around North Myrtle with cocktails in solo cups. When in Rome...
Folks love to bust on Myrtle but they always go back. My boys on WB like to call it "Myrtle Vegas", I guess because everybody there is just passin' through and what happens in Myrtle Vegas, stays in Myrtle Vegas. I personally love that place because as you mentioned it is incomparable in the people watching department. Middle and lower middle class folks come from all over to visit, it really is a slice of middle 'merica. A head shakin' WTF around every corner.
you did get lucky. Overall, I think myrtle has the least rideable consistency of just about any spot from ft lauderdale to rhode island.
Yeah, It was crazy. And SI and Surfline all called pretty much every day I was there flat. The onshore flow never stopped, so I understand that was really why, but I am telling you, I could pick any time of day, just walk down and there was wave. We were 12th floor ocean front, so I watched it all day even when I wasn't out there... It was just consistently mediocre for 4 straight days.
I'm going to be in north myrtle for the next two days for the lifeguard competition. It's going to get weird. In a good way.
I saw like 50 guards out in front of our hotel this morning after I surfed. 6th ave south in North Myrtle. There was a gang of them. I was wondering what they were up to. P.S. Really Myrtle. No skimming between 10-4... SKIMMING? The guards were cool, but there are WAY too many rules up there. No tents. If your umbrella hits the sand, they fine you. One guard, when he told me I couldnt surf in the zone where another one told me I could. I was polite and asked the supervisor first. He said, dude, you can paddle out here and just paddle down. I said down where. He said, you see that brown house? I said yeah. The one that is about 15 blocks south? He replied yup... I said, really, you think I am going to paddle a long board 15 blocks on the outside and then paddle back 15 blocks against a current. Thanks for the tip. Now where is that surf beach you mentioned. Im packing up the trucking and leaving this stretch of sand.
Myrtle blows. I hate that place. You are lucky you scored. My buddy that lives there says it is one of the worst places to surf in the state.
