I was asking around last year, apparently there are some good breaks off the cranberry islands. One of the guys at Cadillac Mountain Sports in Bar harbor was telling me about it. Wish I saw this earlier, just left Surry this morning. Goodluck searching.
This interests me very much. Land in northern ME is cheap, and white trash bars that smell like PBR and fill up with alcoholics by 9am abound. I want to get a second place somewhere up that way. Anybody know of anything north of Popham thats consistent? Not just choppy wind made garbage either. And nothing I need a boat /ferry for. I know Acadia will rock out in heavy storms. I am looking for something that breaks fairly consistently. MAINEWAVES.COM used to be this sweet beta and map site of all the breaks in ME, and they went as far north as Birch Point Beach State Park, maybe even Owls Head. Directions, ariel photos, etc. Last time I tried it the site directed me to a surf camp site. Now it won't even open. I paid $5 for that ish too. Anyone know what happened to Mainewaves.com, or anyone have the PDF they can send me.
The problem with northern Maine is that it lacks good easterly ground swell fetch exposure. South east swell works well around ried state park, popham beach, and the rocky uncharted islands, but you might as well say good bye to good east exposure.
So now I am looking at ariel photos and spotting beaches up north. Googlemap it and let me know what you think... North of Acadia NP: Big Holly Cove, Cutler, ME Petit Manan Nat. Wildlife Refuge in Steuben, ME --that island with road access looks like theres something (smaller) breaking on the sw tip... Schoodic Peninsula looks like it might work Look up Shark Cove in Gouldsboro, and then look on the opposite side of the tip of that peninsula for the pictures. There are 3, one of which is a triple rainbow with some waves in the background. Whatever I had time to kill this morning...
So much driving for potentiel flatness. I'm sure if you get a good south swell, you should score overthere but honestly winter is coming and most common spots will be empty.But if your looking for an adventure/surfing... going to all those places looks pretty fun.
You're not gonna tend to get much straight east swell for those south facing breaks brah. From Yorkie and up where you are, you guys seem to get way more S and SSE than we do on EMass. With all those island systems, I'd think an east swell or similar degree would get all broken up by all the islands and south facing landform even for the parts that are east facing.
