I am moving up to Manteo today, where I'll be working for the summer. I'm bringing my board, hoping to take advantage of the superior swell of the Outer Banks (I'm from Myrtle Beach). Anyone care to provide some tips on some good breaks? I've never surfed there before, so I'd really appreciate it.
I can give you the names of the usual breaks but you wouldnt know where they are located just from that.....To me the best breaks are all south of Nags Head so look around and see what you come up with.
If you want to go down south past Oregan Inlet Bridge, go to Rodanthe Pier or Buxton Lighthouse. Depending on the winds Frisco Peir can sometimes be best. If you wanna go north check out Avalon and Jeannettes Pier. Always park on the side of the road furthest from the beach, they will ticket you real qick. Stay off the dunes, pick up your trash, and be mindful/respectful for the beach and surfers down here
Good advice about the parking. Look for the established paths in the dunes. There is a reason they are there. When crossing the dunes run as fast as you can, cause the skeeters will eat you alive, big salt marsh mosquitos that are hungry. Don't go anywhere near the closed off areas, it is a federal offense. The best for last, find your own break, there are a bunch out there, it's part of the adventure. Piers are fine, as are the established breaks, but they can get clogged with everyone to include peeps that are trying the sport for the first time to pro wanna-be's, and if it's really big and pumping, stay away from s-turns.
Don't forget thick footwear of some sort. There are cacti with 1" spikes growing along those paths. I'm not talking about some wimpy azz sand spurs either. They're the real and will go through a thin pair of slaps.
