Hey guys I usually post in the mid atlantic forum but heres the deal. I am headed to Ocean Isle NC for a golf trip with a crew from work. I am about 15 years oyounger than everyone else going, I'm 35. I was told we are staying two blocks off the beach. Staying at a place called "the winds" off First street. I was hoping maybe some of you guys know whats up in that area and without publicly giving a peak up if you could PM me with where to go. I will be done playing golf daily around 1 and there is enough room for my stick in the Excursion I'm riding down there in to bring my board. If someone could PM me with a peak close to there that would be great. I have checked the Surfline forecast and looks like some SE windswell expected for next week, If its knee high and rideable I'll be happy to get wet!
OIB is one of what we call the armpit beaches. They face due south and get the mud of the cape fear river. They can have epic surf during the storms that bring a southeast swell and a northern wind but they miss out on eastern and northeast swells. Check the direction of the swell. Wrightsville and Carolina (an hour north) get swell from all directions. WB is the best beach and has the clearest water so you can see any critter coming at you. I watched dolphins swimming under my board. But WB can also get crowded and you have to pay for parking.
Thanks I apprceiate it. I know about the surf just north. IM not driving so borrowing a vehicle to drive thar far would be hard. Seeing the report forecast i might get some wind chop to play in.
OIB has fun surf a lotof the time!!! We are well hidden and most people dont even give us a glance!!! The winds has a nice sandbar in front of there so you prob wont have to go anywhere! The winds is ocean front by the way!!! You can always check www.saltyssurfshopoib.com for a webcam look at what the waves are like!!!
thanks guys Thanks guys but i did score. GOt down there Wednesday afternoon aorund 6, I surfed really weak 2 foot little waves with no power. Thursday golf was postponed until noon tee times. I checked the surf Thursday morning but it was all chop storm surf and not really rideable. WEll around 3 on thrusday the rain came back strong so i was at the hotel by 4pm, i ran out to the beach seeing the winds switched offshore and what did i see, glassy shouleer to 1 foot overhead set waves. Chocolate colored barrels. The current was ripping I paddled out at the WInds and ended up almost at the pier. Ocean Isle does have waves
Shhh.....let those who think Sunset, Ocean Isle, and Holden don't get waves keep believing that... granted it's not as conisistent as Wrightsville, Carolina, and Kure BUT the "arm pit" of NC goes off on a good south-southeast swell. Earl gave us EPIC surf...just ask anyone who surfed Holden and Ocean Isle. Igor wasn't too bad either. All in all, the "arm pit" of NC has had a great September. Living in the real armpit here in North Myrtle Beach, I travel north on a regular basis. All of south eastern NC rock from Topsail to Sunset. Ya just have to read the reports and find your own sandbar. The only other place better is Cape Hatteras. Let's just hope it's not a flat winter.....
Yeah i got lucky, live up in Virginia Beach area, and was invited on a company golf tirp, the guy driving asked "are you bringing your surfboard?" I told him definitly if he wouldnt mind me using his truck to drive to the beach, he then said "we are staying across the street from the beach in Ocean Isle". So i brought my 5'-5" round nose fish, should have brought my 5'-9" short board, so it would fit easily in the back of this guys Excursion with 4 peoples luggage and golf clubs. Then all of a sudden Nicole sends sends straight south swell up the coast and the winds switched north late on Thursday afternoon and there it was, great shoulder to 1 foot overhead glass! I definitly could have used a better peak but to go on a golf trip thinking I could paddle out in the evenings maybe catch some thigh high wind swell to scoring great waves was epic. I surfed Earl and Igor here in VB and nags head but that day was the best waves i scored this fall. ITs funny how "soft" the wvaes were for how steep and big it was. I know during igor if you dropped into a haed high steep wave in VB and didnt make it, you paid for it, down there I never paid for dropping in behind the peak, and as fast as they were closing out in some spots I could make it thru sections, I had a BLAST! Oh and by the way, your secret must be safe becasue i surfed for 3 days down there, and had from the WInds resort to the pier in Ocean Isle all to myself, next year on the trip I will be looking to get up with some of you guys to have a little swell forum guys sesh at your better sand bars. I will make sure to bring 5 foot glassy waves with me again next year!
