I've been surfing a long time and have always repaired my own dings. (Not always like a pro, but usually well enough to keep boards in service...)

Yesterday I got a ding on a BRAND NEW BOARD that I'm not really sure how to proceed on. It's basically a large pressure ding on the deck, right next to the stringer, with glass torn along the stringer for about 2-3 inches. See Photos.

My questions are: do I need to remove the deck cloth throughout the pressure ding in order to repair it properly? Or can I just sand it down and repair over it? There are no cracks in the pressure ding area other than the edge that borders the stringer.

In my old-school DIY ways, I've always pulled off the fiberglass throughout the damaged area, then filled with Q-cel, and finally added 2 layers of cloth. But in this case I'm not sure I shouldn't just sand down through the hot coat all around the area, then lay Q-cel along the crack and through the pressure ding, and finally lay glass on top over all of it. In fact I saw a video online from a pro ding repair dude in Hawaii where he apparently did just that.

Or should I not even try to deal with leveling up the entire pressure ding (the cloth is contacting the foam underneath fine), just fill in the part next to the stringer, feather it out a bit, and just live with a pressure ding?

    Opinions?

Man, that sucks. Must be some really low weight foam. This may be a long term issue with this board.

Somebody ran your ass over and put a fin in it.....c'mon tell the truth. Take to your local surf shop and have them do it, and stop cutting people off....lol.

Without a correct intro threade, that's all I got.

WTF is up with this forum? I've been surfing Ocean Beach for 30 years, up to triple overhead+; I've surfed Maverick's, Sunset, Puerto, etc. Who gives a crap?

I was surfing by myself yesterday, on a small-to-medium-sized day, I was goofing around and my board hit me on the back of the head, hard. Just a freak accident. In fact I got a concussion, which has never happened to me before in my life. None of this has anything to do with the freakin question.

After seeing all the lame keyboard warriors chiming in here, I am damned glad I didn't provide any kind of welcome/intro/profile info. Let's see... New Hampshire. Yeah brah, you got some killer waves up there. NOT. I've surfed Rye on the Rocks, it's gay AF. I grew up on the east coast, I know what the waves are like there.

I've done this kind of repair a few times. The way i look at it, the layers of cloth that gave the deck compression strength in a critical area bridging the stringer are broken. You need to restore that stength by reglassing the entire depressed area including across the crack and stringer. Whether you cut out the glass on the compressed side or not (i personally wouldn't - it looks intact, just compressed) you need to build the low area up and reglass. The glass over top of the stringer looks like its slightly lifted off the wood and is no longer bonded. It it is, then that has to go. Dont just fill it with Solarez.

Hey Mitchell, thanks, that was exactly what I was looking for. And my follow up question was gonna be: could I just use Solarez? I've never used that stuff...

One detail: would you do a little Q-cel layer alongside the stringer just to make the transition to the compressed side less abrupt?

Being polite would of been you including an intro of yourself to the group whom you are seeking said advice from. Polite is me giving you the clues to having a positive experience on this here forum.

if its a poly board, then you can use poly lam resin, or poly uv resin. Or epoxy for that matter.

If by solarez you mean the stuff that squeezes out like a paste with fibers in it, then no.

Yes you need to build up the compressed side to be flush with stringer, then sand smooth, then reglass, then hotcoat.

and listen to DP SUP...he's giving you good advice.

    Thanks Mitchell.

And for the record, there is absolutely no indication on the Registration page, or on the Forum FAQ, that one is expected to "introduce" oneself on the forum before asking a question. That may be local custom, but I've never visited this forum before. I certainly didn't expect that asking a simple ding repair question would invoke a series of insults and chidings.

It's "would have", and you ended your first sentence with a preposition. Central FL SUP huh?

It's no big deal dude, it's something everybody has done at one point or another, like getting hazed into the lineup so to speak. If you have truly never been on this forum before, then take this as your initiation. Now a proper intro with a pic of your chic, what whip you drive, how much you bench, and who you are voting for in the upcoming election. It's all very important information, trust me.

Hm, that's actually pretty funny. I can take a joke. But "go kill yourself" is not really very helpful

See, i'm trying to learn you good boy, but you're coming up in here like you own the place already, just sit down and pay attention for a minute before you go all Defcon9 in your first day. We've seen blow-ins like you before.

Don't worry, you won't see me again. I wouldn't be "blowing" (your term) if I hadn't been told to go kill myself, been accused of being a kook, dropping in on people, etc., all for asking a simple ding repair question. I've been to Hawaii and Mexico countless times, I know what it means to respect the locals and wait your turn, and learn the local customs. But as I said there was no indication anywhere about newbie etiquette, and I read through it!

    Enjoy your little club.

Dumbass Florida white trash, you believe in GOD just like a ****ing idiot. Voting for Trump no doubt. Always remember, SUPs are not surfboards, and you are a kook.
