Leaving for the westcoast soon, and I want to find a secure cargo box that can fit up to 3 surfboards, the longest being 6 foot 5ish that I can mount on the top of my subaru and lock when im in sketchyier areas. Anybody have any luck with these things on their cars?

I borrow a friend of mines Yakima (Skybox) on occasion. It is locking, can be opened from both sides, and is easy to install. They have a variety of lengths and volumes that may work for your needs (check their web site). Note: I did not use if for surf boards, however, I was pleased with its features and ease of use.

Can't fit them inside the car??

What else would you be needing to bring... Maybe one wetsuite and one change of clothes?

Thule box. I have one and have done extensive travel with two boards, plus gear, including dive gear, with room to spare. It locks and opens from both sides, which is convenient. Well worth the investment, brother.
