Thoughts on this? To me, 5mm boots or gloves should bring toes/fingers together for max heat. I like the split on my 3mm boots but have never had 5's, only 7's. Then again, I wore my 7's on Friday as I couldn't find both 3's and it didn't feel that clunky for my first sesh back in boots since the spring. About to pull the trigga on a 5mm boot purchase. Not sure which way to go. Also, do you guys think 7's are necessary for February here (36F water) or could I go 5's all winter? In that case, I'd go round-toe mos def.
Hard to tell with the improvements in neoprene over the years. 7mm was always the way to go but then again boots where not sealed as well.. I have 6.5 and they are warm. Not sure you would notice a difference in weight or anything... Rounded is warmer too
What the split toe makes up for in stability they lose in warmth. I used to only rock split 5mils all winter, then I moved to round 5 mils, now its 7 mil round. Last winter was the first winter the cold started to take its toll on me. I'm not sure if it was missing the previous winter or what, but I got my feet into a pair of... wait for it..... R4 booties, that wool liner is so warm. I still wear my 5 mils until the water gets to 50ish then I switch it out.
I'm planning on the round-toe in the 5's. What's the coldest water you cats ever step into with 5's? I've got a pair of 7mm Drylock boots that are still great on their 3rd season. I feel like they're a bit stretched out though and that could make a difference with water retention.
I always had boots but since changed to split toe last year, I will never go back...I feel more connected to my board...after buying the splits, I don't even bother using my 3 mil boots and just use my 5 mil splits...I feel more connected to my board with the 5 mil split vs the 3 mil boot...the bad, my feet get colder. When I want to do over a 2 hour sesh and water gets into low 40's, iam forced to use 7mil boots...don't likem after using splits, but feet stay warm. All my boots are rip curl.
me; i have 'lighties' (3M) and 'heavies' (7M). i use the lighties til they (the boots) tell me to pull on the heavies. i would go split-toe on lighties but not on heavies.
yeah def a line with the 7mm now-a-days. Wore 5mm split last year but they were a little tight, got a pair of 7mm round toe Flash Bombs, super hot towards March. Can never invest in enough neoprene tho, just like boards, always good to have options
Lol sorry bout that man. I was reading through it quickly thinking oh man somebody elese must have posted this already.
This^ I have drylock internal split toe 5mm that I love. Once the water gets into the low 40's I generally switch to my 7mm round toe.
XCEL makes internal split toe? I can only find them online in the QS Cypher, RC F-bomb and O'Neil Mutant boots. Would like to stick with XCEL Drylock which is basically all of my rubber.
I've used the 5mil split-toe Drylocks down to 38-degree water temps ... They held out for about an hour before I couldn't feel my toes anymore. I still prefer the split toe design though due to the feel they give me on the board compared to the round toe. The latter feels like I'm surfing in actual shoes rather than "socks" like the split toe. BTW, the performance of the boot in keeping your feet warm is also directly a result of the ability of your wetsuit to keep you warm ... the quicker your core gets cold, the faster blood will be drawn from your extremities ...
Rounded, 7 mil. C'mon Emass, it sounds like you already knew the answer to this. Your extremities lose heat first. Keep them extra toasty and the rest of your body will be that much warmer. Most importantly, your sesh will last that much longer. If you skimp on heat, you'll soon be beat. I'm getting that tattooed on my face.
Dougie, yes I did know that and thought as much. I mostly agree with you and staying warm equals a more functional, fun and safe sesh. Just getting popular opinion of those I respect. Some here tend to think it's possible to get away with the 5 splits in pretty cold water temps. Given that I've currently got 7 rounded for the real cold temps just in case, I'm gonna purchase some 5 splits. I run hot and tend to be able to go fairly long even in redonk cold in the 5/4 Drylock. If it's a day where I need to wear the 7 rounded then I'm probably being greedy if I want a high level of foot dexterity on the board. 7's are the most expensive boot out there. If I got those, it would be the biggest boot expense possible and I'm limiting myself to 7's now in the weeks and months where I'd otherwise wear 5's if I had them. I've got an older pair of 7's so if I go with the 5's I should be set. If in February I find that I've got holes in my 7's then I'll probably buy a new pair of 7's at that point. Thanks for the input buoys and keep the talk going. Some good points being raised here. Especially pertaining to camels' feet
Always had round toe boots. But I can say from hands, the mittens are better then the gloves. I would imagine the same to be true with split toe vs round toe. Keep everything together for warmth. I picked up a pair of patagucci R4 boots brand new off a local guy for a good price. Stoked on the wool liner. I was using wool socks in my old O'neil boots lol. Gotta be 100% wool socks or they wont hold heat- made getting in and out of the boots/wetsuit easy too. Does anyone wear under armor style leggings or a top under their wetty for warmth/ easier exit? I've been doing it with the leggings and its nice- helps when your getting changed outside to slide right out and get toasty in the automobile.
