Hey guys. What do you all do with your rental car keys when traveling? I usually hide them on the beach, but not close to the car but this isn't really ideal. Anybody have a good solution?

doooooooood same problem except now i have a 2015 ride and it comes with a key fab. can't stash the fab around the car because it automatically unlocks. in the northeast you can bring a towel and shoes to the beach and throw the key in your shoes or something, but in sketchy spots I'm not sure what a good alternative is. i have hidden them but the problem with that is that if i see someone trying to hide something, I'm going to see what it was they hid, and theres always someone watching.

regular old keys and beep locks you could stashe somewhere in your bumper situation.

only real solution to the key fab problem is up your butt. its okay to ask a friend for help too. wrap it in a condom to be safe.

seriously though this new key fob thing is a problem.

is it key fob or fab or i don't effin know. I'm just a cave man....

It you put the keys or the fob up your butt, then dig a hole in the sand and squat, drop, and bury, I don't think anyone will dig it up looking for lost treasure. So that is the solution.

Get one of those combination locks that realtors use to lock house keys in. I put my keys in that and then lock it to the trailer hitch.

I'm confused, I lock up the key FOB and the keys in there.

I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night though, so maybe I'm missing something.

Line it with tinfoil. I like his idea better than mine.

If it's dicey, hire a local guide to watch your car. I have no idea how to find a reputable one, but I've heard of such things in foreign lands.

    Possibilities:
    1. Boardies with pocket and thick elastic loop to secure keys in pocket (not good if keys have electronics/remote).
    2. Leash with a key holder in the ankle (same issues if keys cannot get wet).
    3. Find a unique rock somewhere and put keys under it (see the end of he "Shawshank Redemption" for an example implementation ).
    4. Bury in sand under life guard stands. Use rock or stick for marker. This came in handy the other day.
    5. Take a companion that does not surf and have them maintain possession while you surf. They can also monitor you other stuff (so you can bring a cooler for food and beverages, etc.)
    6. Use a magnetic keyholder box and stick under car somewhere (somewhat risky).
    7. If shack/building structures are around, slip under a piece of siding, cedar shake, or downspout splash blocks.
    8. I'll end here ..use your imagination .. didn't any y'all play hide and seek as kids??

Note: with all these techniques, being subtle, stealthy, and aware of who may be watching is important.

That is all. Carry on with other more pressing matters (i.e., importance of swimming skills and major swell events).

no the new key fobs don't have keys. you just have it, and push a button and the brake and the car starts. all i have to do to unlock my car is walk up to it with the fab in my pocket.

so if its on my roof rack or under my car or in my bumper, its in range to unlock the car. they can't steal the car, without the fab in it (it will stop when out of range?) i think... but they can get at my wallet...

Yeah my model T doesn't have that. Sounds like something that could be hacked too.
