I hate how surfline is practically a shortboard only website. They almost
have nothing other than the shorboard style. I really wish they would mix it up a bit more, especially considering they're considered the leading website for surfing.

Surfline's premium forecasting service is a valuable tool, the LOLA dashboard, the near shore model, etc. The video and news coverage... is inspired by ASP events, freak spots like ships, mavs, and mex pipeline. Their videos are about hell drops and big airs. Things are just at a higher adrenaline level than longboarding. If Joel Tudor is featured, he is on an egg or a fish, if Laird is featured, he is behind a ski at jaws.

Surfline has been around for a long time. I can remember when they use to have surf report phone line. Remember those surf report phone lines? Does anyone still call a surf report? If so, that would be pretty damn cool.

When I used to live in Jax Beach, FL Sunrise surf shop still had a report hot line. This old fella who always takes a morning swim at 6 am did the report every day, and did 2-3 updates depending on swell conditions. I thought it was pretty awesome. ----> 904-241-0933

I'm surprised with how many shops are in here they don't have any hotlines.

Cool? I don't know about "cool," brother.... not sure I even know what cool is these days... but it sure as he!l ain't boring. I know you're talking about the website, and not the actual act of surfing, but if I didn't have a longboard in my quiver, I'd be missing out on a lot of fun, especially during the summer. I'll reach for my longboard 5x more often than my shortboard from about the end of May till hurricane season starts. Even the fish gets more action than my shortboard. IMO, shortboards are for when the surf is good. I'll take a speedy nose trim over a forced, jerky top turn on a thigh high peeler any day. Every time I take out a shortboard on a small day I end up asking myself, how many one foot lip smackers do I need? There's no adrenaline rush in that for me.

logging (in the classic style) is definitely for the kool kats among us & nowhere near boring. boring is a matter of opinion. outside the mainstream, sure. personally, i find watching spastic flapping by the "shortboard only" to be boring & slightly painful. broaden your mind...there's a lot more to riding a traditionally shaped longboard than just standing around.

Amen to that brother. A long board is essential for the east coast summers.

I dunno ,surfline is good for what it is, they have been around along time and cover pretty much the planet.considering a longboard is a must on the east coast for summer.I can see why we might be on the back burner. plus there are other sites check out kordury tv or something.

Try taking a longboard out on an overhead day. WAY better than a shortboard..although scary as hell at times when you get caught inside.

Surfline is legit in my book. They cater to shortboarders, because their marketing team and their trend data shows that a very high percentage of their users are clicking on shortboarding ads, watching shortboard videos and checking shortboard related media.

Thus, surfline's media is dominated by shortboarding stuff. There is no ASP of longboarding. And surfline is also worldwide, but based out of Orange County. And while people may argue that there are tons of longboard waves along the SoCal coast, anyone who lives here or has spent a long period of time here knows that every break from IB to Rincon is DOMINATED by shortboards. Even on a 2 foot day.

So while I break out the log when the waves dictate it, lets all be honest. Most of us use our longboards because the waves aren't looking shortboardable.... So who really wants to see a bunch of guys tooling around in knee to waist high dribble...

If the waves were good enough to be photo worthy, on any given day, anywhere, I think MOST of us would grab the short stick.... There are some hard core longboarders, who shred, so I am not trying to sterotype, I am just saying, it is what it is. I would prefer to see kelly slater shredding 3 foot beach break much more than I would like to see Tudor do it on a long board. Even if its small, high performance short boarding just videos and photos are better...

And I agree that watching in experienced shortboarders flat around in small surf is ugly... But those people are obviously not very talented surfers and beginners.... I can snag waves on my potato chip all day even on a knee high day and I can still keep somewhat of a decent style....
