    thanks a lot guys :)

    1.Soul Surfer- self explanatory
2.Kook- new to the sport, doesnt understand etiquette
    3.Grom- little kid who rips

performance surfing--> strictly looking to push the limits
Longdoggers--> could care less how big it is as long as they can ride
    retro
    weekend warriors
    locals
    Competition surfers
fashion surfers, aka 1980's echo beach era

surfers could be broken down into a billion categories

That's me, but not always the weekend warrior. Another category would be "Posers". :D

There are the "surfers who get so drunk every night they never make dawn patrol". God bless them.

don't forget trendoids who have to ride the latest trendy boards regardless if they work in our waves or not.

LOL and also the "rich beginners" who can't even get down the line but have brand new top of the line gear nicer than anything I've ever been able to afford.

    !

This is easy. I will explain it in 2 categories. Regardless if you body surf, long board, body board, surf, raft, blow-up boat, SUP, or what ever...

    1. You will take-off deep or have at some point in your life.

    2. You will not take-off deep.

If you are the later, you could be classified in about 30 categories and will get hassled everywhere you go. People know if you will go. It's in your eyes. There are some old-guy-long boarders who I know once "got deep!"

Another question: What type from these 2 do you surf with?

    Free Surfer

My 12 year old (who rips and competes) told me I aged myself when I told him I'm a "Soul Surfer" after he asked me why I don't compete.
He said "nobody calls them soul surfers any more, that's old man school talk", we call you guys "free surfers"!

Stated it well. Of course, taking off on a shoulder is deep for some!

A grom is really just a young surfer wether he/she rips or not

i would say a kook dont have to be a beginer. ive been surfing for 15 yrs and im still a kook. hahaha

soul surfers are washed up pot smoking hippies
