I have a relative that is transferring (job related) to either St Thomas or St Croix shortly. I know nothing about the area, but plan on visiting. I'd like advice on the following: 1) which island would you recommend, and why. 2) best time of year to surf. 3) which spots to avoid and why. 4) any other relevant tidbits. Thanks in advance.
ive been to st.thomas. fun place, angry "natives". they like to kill, one of my best friends dad was shot and killed living there. the waves are super fun, can get crowded. probably the funnest is Hull Bay. Its like a 40 minute paddle out but really fun right and left. most consistent time is probably winter, best is probly hurricane season. the intervals between suck, pick up skimboarding. best smoothies ever right in front of meghans bay! i liked it its a cool little island! one important thing is swell direction. most crucial thing to surf on the rock
Second the Hull Bay advice. I got married in St. Thomas, and its a special place for me and the wife. We went on a sailing trip, and the captain surfed and showed me pics of firing secret spots but wouldnt disclose the locations.
yea there are scattered reefs and stuff. but like i said, swell direction. single most important thing
I've heard some horror stories about the localism on St Thomas. How "true" are they? And nothing about St Croix?
idk about st.croix. but i hate to say this but the "caribbeans" if you know what i mean, are doing ****ed up ****. they killed on of my best friends dad, threatened to kill his son in court, and then killed their neighbor. as unbielvable as this sounds its true. i can find the news link. And while driving on the south (i think south) side of the island, my friend told me to roll up my window because stray bullets are common. kind of sketched me out. but if you stay put at night, dont try and start ****, stay in a place where tourist are, you'll be fine. i wqouldnt worry tho!
I always wonder why some of the most beautiful places on earth are so messed up socially. I guess it could be blamed on the lack of opportunity but geeze you could feed yourself with about 30 minutes work diving right off the beach, climb a tree and get fruits and coconuts. It never made sense to me.
Is crime really that much of a factor in the V.I's? I have been to St Thomas and St. John numerous times and have never had any problems. I have herd stories about car break-ins, but that could happen anywhere. I remember on Grand Cayman, some people who I attended a diving trip with, were scared to travel to remote spots; from what I have seen, if you don't act like fool or flaunt $, you shouldn't have a problem. Common sense which could be applied globally.
yea exactley its really nothing compared to central america or mexico, but the thing is its a small island with a lot of angry people. but 9.5/10 chance your gonna be fine. i felt a lot more hated in st.thomas by the "locals" than anywhere else ive been!
I've been going to the USVI since the late 60"s and the attitude of some of the local Cruzans has definitely become more hostile in the last 10 years. That having been said if you use good common sense and are respectful you should be fine. There are a number of breaks on the north shore of St Thomas as well as many breaks on Tortola and other islands in the BVI. Send me a PM and I'll give you more specific info.
