broke my hand and have a softcast on now. doctor told me I can get a waterproof hardcast. anyone have any experience with this?
No, but I sympathize. I hurt finger surfing last week and doc said could surf as long as the splint does not move AT ALL. so I buddy wrapped it to the other fingers except the thumb with Johnsons waterproof adhesive tape. If it wasn't so dang choppy and windy yesterday, it woulda worked out. Was hard to handle the long board, but the tape held up an hour, got out and rewrapped it. Same for pool laps. I want to then put the hand into a surf mitt, but none in local stores. Could order on line, but gotta try on to see if it would compromise the funger splint. I figured if Bethany Hamilton could surf one armed, there was hope. Just can't see sitting out these warm water sunny days. I hope you figure a way too.
Yes it is waterproof to a extent. . . they say you can shower and get it wet but can't go into ocean. Honestly it really does not matter. The thing will start to smell like shi* no matter what you do. So i would say just surf and if it gets messed up they will put another one on. I surfed with my cast for 2 months. (tried to surf with cast)
I learned how to surf when I was 13 with a broken wrist. I swam/surfed everyday for 4 of the 6 weeks I had the thing on, it didn't smell until it came off and never ruined the cast. Rinse good in there after being in the ocean, it can give you a pretty good rash. The only thing you cant get wet on a typical cast is the liner on the inside, the replace this with something that looks like bubble wrap. If technology goes backwards in time then yes the doc may say "you cant swim with it" if not then im assuming 13yrs have made them pretty bomber. youll be good. Three warnings: 1: Wax gets stuck all over the thing, the sun heats it up then it smears all over anything it touches, including but not limited to moms new couch, clothes, the dog, carseats, etc. 2: try to avoid diving, its like a rudder and will shoot back into your face a club you 3: It will ding your board, especially if your just learning/suck
thats pretty interesting aha. would have some leopard looking tan after wearing that. too bad its a UK product, guess I can't be a guinea pig.
thanks for the advice brother, glad to hear. i've been surfing forever, so I am not worried. I am just paranoid about dinging my board with a hard cast, did that happen to you at all?
thanks man! i fight and train when I don't surf, it is another one of my hobbies. i was sparring a buddy without gloves and i caught him on the side of the head, real good boxers break.
Okay, I just bought this awesome thing and swam a mile in it today. It totally kept my hand and lower arm dry. It's a rubber sleeve with a tiny valve where you pump the air out with a rubber bulb, creating an airtight vacuum seal, could be a bit awkward surfing, but the guy said he surfed in it. Made by Drycorp and it's called Dry Pro in the USA. Here is the link: http://store.drycorp.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=34&gclid=CIzG6YH1pr4CFaZlOgodOAYACQ
