What do you all use to attach your leash to? The little rope I have been using for like a year finally broke here recently and all I had to use was part of an old shoestring and that has broke twice. Getting tired of swimming to shore for my board and was wondering if anyone knew of a surefire way to keep the leash attached to it without worry. Thanks in advance.

They should have the little ropes for it at your local surf shop....

IF you can't find that though, go to west marine, they sell a small diameter white Dacron cord for sailing purposes. It's super strong and durable.

I've always wondered what those big wave guys use. I can't imagine that tiny little rope that comes with the leash would hold in 15 foot+ waves

I use a 20lb test PowerPro Braided fishing line wrapped around it self a bunch of times. It's all i had in my car.

Two lines on leash plug. Good watermen also swim if you have to. A while back they did not have those leashes. You shold also check and replace any worn equipment on a daily basis. On this coast I don\'t any long swims.

Samson Rope from West Marine... available in different diameters. I use 1/8" on shortboards, but double it around for big wave boards.

FYI... guns typically have two leash plugs.

Ha! looks like epi-epic beat me to it...

Oh... and see the way those plugs are installed. That's wrong, IMO. I can't understand why you'd put the plugs in with the bar parallel to the stringer, especially when they're off the stringer. Think about how that bar takes the load... a different amount of force is applied to each end of the bar. If you put the plug in with the bar perpendicular to the stringer, the force is distributed evenly across the bar.

    Just my two sense...

Thanks for the replies...Would a zip-tie type thing be reasonable? I've never really thought about using one before, but it seems like it might work pretty well.

I'm no physicist but I would assume that a zip tie wouldn't give you that elasticity you may need and over time would just end up yanking the plug box out.

Just make sure you wash the string with fresh water after every session like you should with all your gear (amazing how many surfers neglect this) and I don't know if it actually does anything besides make me feel like I'm doing something but I spray fishing line conditioner on all my leash straps and strings.

a zip tie can hold for a while but itll get brittle a break. i think spells gives you those little ropes for free ive gotten one from there before. right now i'm using the rope from my soccer shorts cuz i needed and didnt wanna drive anywhere

I finally broke down and just got a cord from the surf shop, my previous one held for a good while so it should be straight. As for the zip tie, Dave I\'m kinda in agreement with you that it wouldn\'t stretch like a rope/cord would, thus possibly yanking the plug completely out...definitely don\'t want to do that!

If you want it to last longer dont tie it like that, tie the knot the same but loop the whole thing through the plug and wrap it back through itself. Like this:

That's what I was going to say. It's called a girth hitch. Much better way imo.

Hardware stores have the braided nylon in different diameters.....zip ties aren't UV proof.....plus the plastic tabs are rated at around 50lbs, their strength is the tab that holds the ridges....metal ones are stronger but will fail in saltwater...dont bother.
