hahaha that was hilarious ......I can see how some people could say that is the meaning of a kook. Although it has been taken out of context. What you are describing seems more like a poser at the most. I can't lie though.....I have used the word kook out of context b4. Like at a local jersey shore bar when you see a dude rocking a rash guard. Is the guy wearing a rash guard to the bar a kook? Yeah probably...but just cause hes wearing it doesn't make him one. He's just an idiot. I'm old school and that's what kook meant when i was growing up...

 

I always feel like a poser/kook when I go back to visit my parent si nthe DC area and I go to the mall sporting Uggs and other surf clothes, kind of feel like a fish out of water even though I grew up there.

 

my thoughts

If you paddle out somewhere not familiar to you, and try to sit on the peak, when it is apparent that everyone in the lineup knows each other. Your a kook

If you dont think you have to put your time in at a spot to get respect, your a kook.

If you ride a surfboard and think you are superior to someone who rides a bodyboard...your a kook

It's fairly well-known in the older segment of the surfing community that "kook" is Hawaiian in origin (orig. spelling "kukai" (?)). It means "****" (n.); hence the derogatory connotations. California surfers brought the term back from the Islands in the 30's and 40's. Example: At San Onofre (along with Malibu, one of the original surf spots in So. Cal.), there was a small canyon above the surfing beach that was named "Kukai Canyon." It was where everyone went to defecate in those pre-outhouse days. The surfers used the term "kook" to refer to newbie surfers lacking any surfing skill whatsoever.

a kook is always someone that messes up your best wave of the day, when they just stop paddling because they are afraid and look at you and get in your way. happens all the time

Thanks for saying that for all of us who call the coast home. All this spring/summer deuchebaggery is pissing me off. I migrated down here 5 years ago, and while I may travel, I'll always lay in the flatlands near the waves, here, there, or anywhere. But here is where I call home, and plan to forever. I live simple and quietly as any real waverider does.

This ain't a status thing. You can play dress up at home.

This **** is about dedication, gratitude and commitment, if you don't have those 3 things you don't deserve what we have. With them you'll gain pleasure and pain, but those who use the ocean like a junk filled tool deserve neither. Grow up. And do it fast. Come with respect or don't come at all...

Bottom line on the kook thing is that a kook is someone who goes where they don't belong without bringing humility and respect. If you want to ride waves for fun, when it's convenient for you, then fine, but shut up, don't talk **** to those who grew up here. Unless your born where you can hear the waves at you window, you'll have to sometime or another.

AND, If you don't like the town then why do you come? While the tourism drives me mad, the locals I've met are really great people, with far less of a cynical, judgemental mindstate as the ones on the other side of the bay bridge whom I grew up with. I hate to see people with no depth get turned onto such a gift. It should be earned and appreciated.

Say what you will, but I love this strange strip of coastline, and I'd rather not see spoiled brats come and act like they are king ****, when they are nothing but a fade in the foreground of our currently unfocused shot.

While I come from where many of you do, I did not come for your reasons. Go to burgerking and drive around the parking lot awhile.

The waves here suck anyway.

 

Well said steelwave, ive lived right on the beach for 20+ years now, and almost nothing makes me madder than summer kooks..... However I always try to let new people earn my respect when i see them in the lineup for the first time, and more often than not they lose it very quickly. If you are new to any surf-spot, it doesn't matter what your skill or reasons for surfing are, if you show the locals some respect they will return it, something all the summer kooks should keep in mind for next time.(maybe you will gain redemption from kook-status)

 

The whole "kook" or "benny" thing should just be dropped. Its retarded. I lived at the most 5 min from the beach for 17 years, and how this whole "I'm better than you", "Locals only", or w/e showed up around this area, idk. This isn't the West coast, this is the East coast- the "RIGHT" coast!!! Take waves for granted, but also share with others. "Do one to others as one would do to you." -GOLDEN RULE!

i agree. ive been goin down to squan for about 4 years now and i still get called a benny just because im not from the town. i understand im not from around there but i see the same people every year and show my respect. most of the locals still act like little kids about it. still wondering what thats all about.kinda wack tho
