Its not always BIG, but probably 8 or 9 out of 10 times I watch the cam on surfline, its like knee or waist high and clean. Why is this? Does it just pick up more swell because it is more exposed?

Reef break/point break. Two factors that add up to clean, non closeout waves

A reef doesn't make it more consistent. Without swell you have no waves reef or not. That area of long island is very swell exposed. Just look at the noaa graphical forecast wave heights. You'll always see how far eastern LI is much bigger than anywhere else.

Montauk's the epicenter of NY surfing. Though there's some angry locals out there who hate the Manhattanization of the place, and all the hipster, "yeah I surf," guys showing up. They'll let you out at Ditch Plains but other spots they'll get at you.

Ahhh, the crisis of sleepy, out-of-the-way fishing villages vs urban, chic, tourists and the surfing hobbyists. Gotta love it. My God they even have a 7-11 there now...........

There's even rumors that Montauk is more consistent than New Symrna Beach.......

There once was a local from Montauk,
Who rode a board with his hair in a Mohawk.
He said with a grin, as blood ran down his chin,
I'll choke you tourists out with a headlock.

its more exposed to swell than other parts west. I've checked the cams plenty of times and have been awed by how there are never any waves there.
so I'm pretty sure you shouldnt even bother going there. Jersey is better.... any part of jersey.

first off, like every spot, nobody likes a foreign crowd.but, montauk is a very wealthy area with Nassau county sheriffs every 15 ft,the locals would not "get at you" as in beat the crap out of u im guessin?im sure they'll talk shyt and maybe scratch your car,but most folks out there aren't going to hurt you.you should always have respect wherever u go,and u wont have a hard time.i paddled out there one day on the lifeguard sled among 20 other kids.genuine people, very classy, just don't be an a'hole ,wait your turn and surf, and you should have a good time.eastern li is such a great place, would love to live there again.it goes from country to the sea.lots of land,no hipster losers, very nice.my longlost pops n gma live out there, havnt been there in 8yrs

I read in a surfermag a while ago, about a spotcheck on obx, saying they hate non locals and will trash you.again, completely wrong.most folks out of nags head, kdh, etc are big Christian communities.i hate to break it to u but the toughguy scene died out in the 80s.people go to jail and get banned from the beach nowadays.just give respect to get respect, and know your limits

Nahh, Cep, those old time Montauk locals, not wealthy, are crazy. Their end-of-the-road paradise has been violated and they're pissed, especially some dude named Cheyene. He's totally bent. He hates "Citidiots." He says all you Eric Eichen-Long Beach folks should stay home......

And Montauk is at least two-three foot all day, everyday.......NSB eat your heart out because it's a thumping two foot. And hozana on the highest, when them swells come calling Montauk is Double Overhead and is full of secret point breaks. Totally twitchen.

They got sharks there, too. Isn't the biggest great white ever caught on rod and reel from Long Island? The sharks don't like anyone west of the Hamptons. Oh Long Island goes special happy on 'cane swells, too. The biggest east coast waves I have ever seen in person went down in one of them Hampton places. Wow, what an elitist, segregated, inclusive place those Hamptons are. Man, they don't even let foreigners park anywhere.

Sandblasters let's examine the east coast compared to the rest of the world........

West coast of North America is better. Asia is better. The South Pacific is better. Western Europe is better. South America is better. Central America is better. Africa is better. Australia/New ZZZealand is better. Shucks, even places in the Mediterranean Sea have better set-ups.

Happy to say we can look down on The Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Ha Ha suckers.......

Now don't get discouraged young and/or novices because the east coast will provide for you for a long time......but then one day will come when you want some friggin quality.

So this is why Montauk, NY is a shinning star, for it is the greatest place on the east coast and possibly the world. Let us pay homage and reverence to this unique place by limiting its exposure to guys from Manhattan and the dreaded Brooklyn hipsters. Man, I saw some dude with tight grey jeans, skin tight, and he had the leg folded up to his upper shin. Tight stripped t-shirt and a goatee. I guess he forgot his wool beenie. Man, what is this world coming to? It makes me miss the surburban gangster craze with the bagginess, man, the bagginess. At least those dudes looked cool. Tough, like Ponyboy Mustang "tuff."

First off ... MTK is awesome. I'm in the middle of the island and the further east you go ... the bigger the swell. More exposure. There is a bit of that attitude out there but hey .... it NY !!! Completely understandable ... most locals are hardworking regular folk (fisherman, Store owners, contractors...etc). What's happend over the last 1-2 decades is you got the invasion of Hollywood and Wall St. The Hamptons are ridicuously uppity and MTK is the only place left where you can still be in brd shorts and T-Shirt and not feel under dressed in town. Not that I give a @#$@ anyway.

The issue is that it's starting to disappear with the Yups and Fashionista's showing up in their Land Rovers and $1500 LB's. Locals don't like that .... especially when you show up thinking you own the place because you just rented a house on the beach for 6K for the weekend and start dropping in on people and getting in the way. Give resp ... get resp. Ok ... I've ranted long enough ...

Word of advice ....stay away from Ditch .... too crowded .... it's like a parking lot out there. They'll all be gone come Sept anyway.... just in time for H-cane season ....

Nahh man, you didn't rant too long. I enjoyed your rant. Good stuff. Plus, you seem to know what you are talking aboot, which is quite rare around here.

    You should rant more often.

Better for what, surf? Or food, women, contraband, discotheques, and other vices? Because you just opened up a whole host of threads that can get us through any effects of archy-based conspiracy theories on the sandstorms off West Africa preventing canes coming our way.

I'm da Right Coast born and bred til I shred. We all know that good waves facilitate good rides, that's a given. However, I'm from the school of thought that training in conditions and to a level that exceeds in rigor, challenge, and peril of what you ever will face when it really matters (competition, Judgment Day, April 15th, wedding day, etc.) will result in you being composed and proficient during those critical days of decisiveness.

I'm open to so much if not all of what you gentleman scholars (and true coxmen!) have to offer for beliefs and tenets, but are you to say I am not being served well with an East Coast wave rearing that necessitates perfect positioning to get any wave at all most days? Not to mention fighting through mediocre power and punch to plane enough to nail most takeoffs on a SB. That's got to behoove me once I get in near-perfect waves a few days from now down near The Equator. Yes, they will be way steeper and faster and so much more powerful, but I've seen some glimpses of that back in the great spring we had.

Sage, did you mean Ponyboy Curtis? He may have driven a Stang, like this one: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2641497/1966-ford-mustang/

As for Montauk, I'll be heading there in September to see what the whole big to do is about. And I will be excited to do so. Hopefully the crowd from Neptune's on a Saturday doesn't migrate over. That would be bad. For them.

Absolutely true. All the grovelling for surf we do here on the east coast sharpens the blade for when the real stuff hits. That is why Kelly, and CJ, and Damien Hobgood and Cory Lopez, and so many other big time and not so big time pro surfers hail from Florida, home of the four month long flat spell, and 2 foot mushburgers.

A bit of advice on your first taste of Pacific juice: Duck diving technique is critical. Aim for the base of the wave, as low as you can, and once you puncture the surface, aim as much forward as down, and extend your arms as much as possible. It is like going through a mini tsunami compared to east coast stuff, and lasts for a few seconds longer.. If you hit it too high, or pop up too soon, you will be sucked up and backwards and unceremoniously deposited back on the beach. It took me a couple of days to get it down on my first trip.

That dude's awesome......sporting the Winnipeg Jets jersey........manly facial hair.........killer specs.........totally killer hat. Hmmmm maybe these hipsters have something going on.

I figure all I need is some tight jeans, some striped t-shirts(tight as well), and a couple beenies and I'm set. I usually sport an Amish beard in respect to Lancaster,PA's Amish Mafia(be sure to tune in tonight - new season), so I'm good with the facial hair.

Then I need to move to Philly and ride a bicycle around hapahazardly....maybe get a couple of tats.........yeah, this could be a whole new life for me. Join up with a surf crew and take a few trips a months to cool locations.......yeah.....start attending "verbal perfomance art" shows..........Then when I'm ready move to a gentrified section of Brooklyn.

Montauk locals are about 1 inch away from forming a DaHui chapter and beating some hipster tail. Beyond the fact that they're tourists who can't surf, they leave cig butts on the beach and do not leave the 'too cool' attitude in Wiliamsburg or DUMBO when they show up for some sun and fun wearing their funny costumes and facial hair. When is that stupid fashion movement going to end?
