Took a hit to the kidney from my 9 6 and almost lost the kidney. I got a helicopter ride to Norfolk General. I was there 2 weeks. Months of recovery with a pee bag and abdominal drain. I win.
omg.... wtf is with everyone here!!! sucks about all of these injuries.... seems like one is worse than the last. if I had to guess.... all you guys are really hard chargers... with questionable luck or athletic ability! no but really helicopter rides and er visits.... does not make for a good surf session.
my worst injury was from Skating not surfing . I was skating the South Philly Warehouse and I dislocated my shoulder doing a Back side air in the deep section. I over shot it and was going to flat bottom . Needless to say I went 12 ft straight down on it . I ended up breaking the cup that holds the joint it clean off and its held in now with two Screws . I had a year of PT and recovery
Torn patellar tendon and medial and lateral meniscus when I got dropped in on and the guys board hit my knee. Surgery and two years later my knee sounds like its full of gravel. Only good thing that came out of it was the nose of his board broke and wasn't a scratch on mine. At least he wasn't in the line up anymore.
Hell yeah its great having a Key there . Always a place to skate with there's snow , rain or No waves
That happened to Gerry Lopez at Pipe last century. Some guy cut him off. He got pitched in the lip. Board stuck tail up in reef. He came down and tried to kick it out of the way. Cut his foot got a fiberglass enema.
Board shot back at me after going over the falls. Hit me just below the jaw. Woke up laying on top of my board, but don't know how that happened. Wasn't knocked out long, but people were headed towards me to make sure I was okay. Another time I was in Nicaragua and my board shot back at me and hit my temple close to my eye. Luckily it was the rail and not something sharp. Still bled like it was a deep tissue injury. I just remember hearing a loud pop sound and saying to myself, "I think my board just hit me." Had a headache for a few hours and it was the last day of the surf trip. Both incidents happened on 4-5 foot waves so don't let your guard down just because it's a routine session. Injuries can happen at any time. Stay safe out there folks.
1. worst was 8 staples when I got hit in the head with an epoxy longboard...but only kept me out of the water a couple months. 2. blew my shoulder out paddling - kept me out of the water for a year. 3. herniated a disk snowboarding - kept me out of the water for over 6 months. 4. bruised my ribs on the rail several times, but that usually doesn't keep my out of the water...it just hurts like hell when I do surf.
worst injury was actually during blown out Eduardo, took off on a wave wayyyy too hollow and I tried to just jump over the top but of course my foot dragged me into it and I went over the falls horizontal and sideways. as if you were sleeping on your side, and my board was at the flat of the water just sitting there waiting for me to land on it. and now it hurts to breathe occasionally due to the fact the only body part for it to it was the right side of my ribs. but at least I made it out of there with a minor crack on the rail and not a broken board. saw three different people break there boards that day.
This season I've been super scared of stingrays... seen so much stuff posted on social media about them, and I always see them when walking out in the ocean. Luckily nothing bad has happened yet
Concussion from my longboard rail in dinky 4ft OCNJ surf. I learned what is truly meant by "seeing stars" and "head ringing" that day. I also thought it damn near took my ear off;at least it felt like it but there wasn't even any blood. Just a nasty bruise. It took two full weeks for the headaches, bad mood and nausea to go away. My jaw still clicks and pops on that side a year later. Also tore a hamstring on an nasty in one of back bowls in Telluride. That one took a year to full mostly normal.
